John Coltrane The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording

Citing the cripple from "Monty Python's Life of Brian": "I've got as much as you want back there" (to be read with a rough voice and a cheeky wink)... P.S.: it has nothing to do with 'Trane or free jazz, but I recommend the film to both adults and kids looking for some "blasphemous" laughs... by the way, did you review it on Debaser? I'll check!

What fascinates me the most about Coltrane is his refusal to become stagnant on achieved milestones. I viscerally love "A Love Supreme," but this live performance is truly a story unto itself: while the aforementioned masterpiece of the historic quartet has been very useful in bringing many people from rock (myself included: raised by my dad on bread and jazz, led astray by certain punk-hardcore of a peculiar kind, and only later, through some "bridges" between extreme rock and jazz, returned to appreciating the sounds of my childhood!) closer to jazz, "Olatunji Concert" might enchant those who perhaps come from noise, hardcore, or other fringes of extreme rock... accustomed, by the way, to what can affectionately be described as "cesspool-like" recordings. Not a Coltrane that will satisfy jazz purists, but certainly one of the most intense! I recommend listening to it. Here’s a link for a legal streaming: link rotto The choice is yours!

The fact that the album continues to receive 5 stars pleases me more than anything else. For all those who speak about it in superlatives -which is completely understandable- I have a question: but then why haven't you reviewed it until now? ;-)

Regarding the number of stars: I decided to give the album 4 stars, even though it's one of my top 10 desert island picks, because the fifth star is reserved for those brave enough to delve into such sounds that, now as then, remain largely unheard!
On the coldness: I was more interested in conveying an idea of the record rather than offering yet another tear-jerking praise for the late Albert.
About my psychopathy: I never claimed to be normal, especially since I don't see many merits in being so...
