I don't see it connected to anything because there’s no purpose here! You don’t become men, you don’t get understood by those around you (in the case of Pani and Tulipani, by your own family)! Here in Into the Wild there’s an "instinctive scatter-brain" quality that’s totally non-constructive/planning, typical of everything that’s undertaken "on a whim"! As Supersoul said, he’s a misfit! He’s really troubled inside and leaves, while being in something you don’t realize if once it’s over it will have made you grow, it will have made you understand! And he died while he was still in it! If we could find a purpose in what Chris did, we would find it in his life after the experience, but he’s dead... he could have continued living into the wild or not, we don’t know… we don’t know if he wanted to be alone and free, if that was the best condition for him, if he couldn’t take it anymore, if he would have found a girl similar to him and built a cabin, or if he would have gone back to the city or who knows… theoretically, this is why the film should "resonate" (it doesn’t work for me :D) because there’s this "epicness" (not intended by Chris, but circumstantial given how things went) that Americans thrive on and they make it intentional with their film! Then there’s this thing about the ending… the quote… the mental embrace! That should be the purpose! That is, in reality it was all a coming-of-age journey… but in fact, you can’t say that with certainty!
