He has made lo-fi albums as well, "Son de Mar" above all, but given the inexplicable and unimpeachable wickedness of the reference film, one could just as well close both eyes, were it not that shortly after here he is presenting us with "The Trouble Sleep of...", which, except for 3 tracks, not only poorly facilitates sleep but even leads you to agonize over the presence of someone snoring heavily beside you, in order to dismantle with obsessive guttural sounds the persistence of certain narcoleptic/subliminal laments included therein.

Weatherall has very little to do with the genesis of this album; this was the path to embark on to achieve a complete form of the original (excellent) intuitions, and the two bold non-musicians who took it deserve the credit, with zero elitism and experimental impulses that truly smell of regression. And so, in the end, we find ourselves holding what is the freshest sound born from a scene (the electronic one) that has lately been somewhat stagnant.

I saw them last spring, when those at Locomotiv set up a three-day event that still moves me to remember: Matmos, Akron/Family, and Sunn O))) in temporal succession!!! For some, they might be fluff, but if their proposal is silly, it’s silly like QUICKLIME... which in its pure form delivers at its best, given that you find yourself there, inert yet sentient, frying ALIVE in an alien atmosphere, ground down by the crackling of (multiple) frequencies above and below the skin... A disinfecting and pest-repelling experience!!! Moreover, they can always do the same thing, but predictable live shows aren’t easily stacked (back then, they completely ignored the latest release, digging deep into the primeval repertoire).

"Apparitions" as an opening isn't exactly a great business card, given the overpowering stench of Mogwai and/or GY!BE and/or Explosions in the Sky and/or (pick a random name from the scene that all sounds the same... Mono?!). Then thankfully they remember to include some hefty riffs in a scale and drop the tunings, dust off the saints of Isis and Cult of Luna, and, somehow, manage to finish the homework properly.
