I see your new Sanjuro profile, and I think it’s sincere, so I’ll get serious for a moment and share some of my reflections on what I think: if you read this, fine; if not, that’s fine too. First of all, I have to say that I found you an interesting and useful Avatar for the (fictional) life of DeBaser, so I thought that some of your deliberately exaggerated behaviors were part of a destabilizing project you had in mind, but at least partly you knew they were exaggerated. Instead, reading your profile (which I assume is sincere) and the subsequent outing (let’s call it that), I see that as you’re leaving, you’re ramping up your criticism against a presumed conformity you see around you. But at this point, I have to ask you: are you really, really sure that your need to be against everything at all costs doesn’t make you more boxed in than you think you are? In simple terms, in a world where everyone is competing to be alternative and enjoy this supposed uniqueness as much as possible, don’t you think that the real “Out of the box” is claiming a quiet and normal life and, since we’re talking about music, one’s ordinary tastes (in the good sense of the term)? Sanjuro, the impression you give me is that of a person with serious difficulties in self-acceptance, striving to stand out at all costs, often overshadowing others. And as far as DeBaser or the web goes, your over-the-top (and often offensive… and remember well, there’s no alternative or anything else that justifies rudeness) behaviors could have been tolerable for me. But if your virtual self truly reflects your real self, I’m genuinely perplexed: what bothers you about the fact that music is now easily accessible to everyone? Are you sure it’s just because hordes of kids pretend to be professors, or do you feel robbed of that role of being part of small circles of intellectuals who decide what is beautiful or ugly, what is artistically valid or not? If that’s the case, let me inform you: even if that were possible, your idea is wrong. Times are changing, and fortunately, we live in a democracy where everyone can express opinions freely (and the fact that you don’t like this makes me think you have a vision of freedom of expression that’s fine with you as long as it aligns with yours). Even if the 10,000 records you’ve listened to in 30 years have been consumed by them in two months, you must accept that it’s not the time that determines merits, nor is it the quantity, but the quality, and at this point, I think you’re neglecting all of this.
