In my opinion, the choice was made in favor of the box office rather than telling Ray's story. There's no doubt that Eastwood's "Bird" is definitely superior to this.

I, on the other hand, don't love this film and I don't hate it; I share what s4doll wrote, adding that it focuses too much on Ray's excesses and too little on the poetry expressed in many of his songs, a missed opportunity.

This isn't about giving 1 or 5 stars because there are certainly worse films, but there are also better ones. It's a fun movie without too many pretensions, with some good moments and others that are a bit more "subpar."
