In my opinion, to create those things, even with sampling and various stuff, you need to know about music. In fact, I dislike house because it's clear that those who make it don't understand anything about music. Here, the sampling is done with class. The kind of attitude: who cares if it's not real music? I like it!

trickykid, in my opinion, the beauty lies precisely in this: creating, through machines and sampling, a new music that draws inspiration from everywhere but becomes something never seen before. I don't entirely agree with the illiteracy you mention: I believe that to create that music one must be musically skilled, because it's not true that machines do everything on their own. Moreover, for this album, they used 1970s instruments, those of my beloved progressive era, namely the Moog synthesizer and Hammond, in addition to the guitar. But the most technical yet expressive element is Beth Gibbons' voice, which I believe is the best female voice of all. I’ll tell you that after listening to this album, I downloaded the complete discography of Portishead: Dummy, Portishead, Roseland live, two remix albums and some bonus remixes, and the quality is medium-high. Fantastic, it's the music that resonates with me.
