Don't worry Neu!, I’m not offended but I just wanted to clarify my favorite bands. Anyway, as for black metal, I would recommend Venom (the first three albums), Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Darkthrone, Children Of Bodom, Cradle Of Filth, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Celtic Frost, and Bathory. The death metal bands are Deicide, Morbid Angel, Death, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Opeth, Nile, and Sepultura. What do you think of them?

Neu! I understood nightclub hardcore simply because today you only hear that kind of hardcore mentioned instead of the Misfits' one!! To be honest, I don't really care much about hardcore in general. There's a lot of superior music out there... and I don't think I'm ignorant just for not recognizing true hardcore from nightclub stuff... I'd like to see if you know all my bands, and I assure you they're not ONLY the ones I've listed, and let's see who's more ignorant.

Since you've now explained yourself and specified your knowledge better, I can tell you that I'm no longer clearly against your tastes. If by hardcore you mean Misfits and Fugazi, I can fully agree with you. The other bands you've listed are among my favorites, which unfortunately I didn't mention earlier, namely Gong, Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells," the great Soft Machine's "Third," and Robert Wyatt. The Ramones are legends (I love all their songs), the Clash are fantastic, the Sex Pistols, Jefferson Airplane, and Grateful Dead are icons of rock and punk. The grand prog bands like Van Der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson's "In The Wake Of Poseidon" and "In The Court Of The Crimson King" are fabulous (I like all their albums). I'm familiar with Type O Negative, and of course Metallica are among my favorites in thrash, thanks to albums like "Kill Em All," "Master Of Puppets," "And Justice For All," and the "Black Album." I also appreciate Captain Beefheart, Sonic Youth, the great Frank Zappa, Pixies, Van Morrison, and the magnificent Doors with Jim Morrison. What can I say about Jimi Hendrix? A LEGEND!! I love Roxy Music ("More Than This," "Virginia Plain," "Do The Strand"), Patti Smith ("Because The Night"), Velvet Underground ("Sunday Morning..."), Nico, Lou Reed, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. These are bands I forgot to mention to you, partly because I couldn't list them all... I also like jazz, especially blues-rock. I agree with you on the idea that MTV sucks... I hope I haven't forgotten any important bands, but for what you could gather, I enjoy all GOOD MUSIC from the sixties onwards... One curiosity: What do you think and which bands do you listen to in black and death metal?

I wanted to tell you that the genres and bands I listen to are not few, as you say, and if you'd like, I can even list them ALL! I’m serious! I got passionate about music with the Beatles, so I’m talking about beat music, while the first metal and hard rock bands I heard were Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Scorpions, Dire Straits, and Deep Purple. After getting to know all the other hard rock bands of the seventies (Cream, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, The Who, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Alice Cooper...), I dove deeper into metal, exploring prog rock, glam rock, and southern rock. Later, I listened to Venom, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Diamond Head, Malmsteen, Motörhead, Kiss, and many others. After that, I discovered thrash (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Kreator, Pantera, Sepultura), gothic, power, doom, and death (Deicide, Morbid Angel...) and black metal. At this point, I can confidently say that THIS IS REAL MUSIC, MUSIC WITH BALLS AND HEART, and NOT the commercial and useless bands of TODAY!! Everything has deteriorated today, and the "artists" of today are clearly inferior to those from twenty or thirty years ago. I don’t listen to pop, hardcore, and house music because it’s made solely to make MONEY, and record labels now couldn’t care less about people who can actually PLAY. Festivalbar and San Remo are absolute nonsense, and I would like to make those idiots who participate in them truly hear what real music is. If you want to limit yourself to listening to the commercial bands of today, you can do that, but you should know that music is something entirely different!!

Of course I know the genres you mentioned, and I like some of them too! For example, I listen to new wave like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Talking Heads, and Roxy Music, ambient music, Brian Eno, then I know the dream pop of Dead Can Dance and My Bloody Valentine, and industrial music. However, I'm not sure what exactly Canterbury school, dub, and trip hop are...

Neu, maybe you don’t know how many genres of music I am familiar with... In addition to classic metal, I listen to its subgenres: black, thrash, death, epic, gothic, AOR, power, doom. Then I also enjoy prog rock (Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Camel, ELP), hard rock, glam rock (Sweet, T.Rex), blues rock, southern rock, and some electronic music like Depeche Mode. So I think I’m not really ignorant... I definitely exclude pop, light music (Pausini...), techno, hardcore, house, hip hop, disco dance.

Great review and good album by Night Ranger.. The best tracks for me are the grand "Sister Christian," "You Can Still Rock In America," and "When You Close Your Eyes."
