But original not in sound, but at a strictly compositional level; it's not the same old worn-out prog metal. It's clear that the Maiden changed history, but the merits of Opeth, even if not "historical," are enormous.

Limiting the discussion to Opeth alone, I don't think they can be defined as epigones, much less than Maiden, whom I find much more standard and less original in their compositions.
