Guys, what a nice discussion! We're basically talking about all my favorite bands (Nirvana, Wipers, Hüsker Dü, Wipers)... all we needed was a beer and a cigarette in good company, and the evening would have been set. Anyway, let's leave the history of rock to Scaruffi and other nitwits... in any case, it seems objective to me that Hüsker Dü are incredibly influential and seminal even for Nirvana's music, and Nirvana are ten thousand times more influential for the visibility they managed to achieve. I, for one, will never change my mind—I'm on Team Nevermind... nothing better exists for me.

to say that Pasolini is a fake intellectual is a kick in the ass, but as long as he lives. Uccellacci e uccellini is his most successful film. 2001 may be tedious, in the sense that if you're a bit tipsy or a bit sleepy, it's not for you, but it is the film. Of course, I guess it's no coincidence that he writes critiques for the newspaper... the absolute dumbest newspaper.

the softened sound of nevermind is softened just like goo by sonic youth, warehouse by husker, green mind by dinosaur, transmission from the satellite heart by flaming. I mean, it’s softened like all major productions. many have tried, including husker, but only nirvana succeeded. with this, I’m not saying that nirvana is the best in an absolute sense (husker is one of my favorite bands and it’s not a competition), but objectively they are the only ones who managed it, and it’s not a matter of geffen or not geffen... because geffen believed they would sell a maximum of 500 thousand copies in a year. so, for me, they’re not the best, but they are the only ones who succeeded.

So... I’ll try to bring some order. Sage, Mould, Mascis, they’re all great songwriters just like Cobain. However, despite the undeniable talents (to me) of Sage, Mould, and Mascis, Cobain is the only one who managed to spark a revolution. Today, with the web, Nirvana have lost their role as a pioneering band, but I dare anyone to claim they didn't encounter American underground music through Nirvana with various Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, Flipper, Dinosaur Jr, Black Flag, etc... At least that’s how it happened for me, and I believe for most people my age. Plus, Nirvana are truly the only underground band that managed to become a national sensation, and many have tried to do so (Hüsker Dü, Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr...). So: he may not be a genius, but who cares... he remains my favorite and, in my opinion, the greatest.
