John Carpenter In The Mouth of Madness - Il Seme Della Follia
Voto:
A brief review, but I really appreciate the initial mini-praise for the great (and much-loved by me) HPL. The film is excellent, well-acted, and the ending is really nice, very "Lovecraftian" to stay on theme. I give it a 4 also for the reference to the Solitario di Providence. Mini-bomb: I heard that the talented director Guillermo del Toro intends to make a film based on "At The Mountains Of Madness." I'll pray to Dagon for that to happen. P.S. Carpenter is a great one; my favorite is "The Thing."
Stanley Kubrick The Shining

The entire film is acted perfectly, and the direction of the actors is perfect as well (though I have the impression that working with a super-showman like Nicholson must be tough).. Personally, I can't consider it a masterpiece.. Maybe because what the film IS has surpassed over the years what it tries to SAY..

Isis, yours is a second-rate super-heroism, somewhat flabby, a bit D’Annunzian, a bit worn out, sad..

I'm so boastful as to quote myself :-P
"The film is technically impeccable, with a masterful recreation of the environment and an innovative and unique use of space.. I believe it is the first to fully exploit the distressing oppression of the long corridor lines.. However, its exceptional technical structure seems to overshadow the metaphorical and para-psychological discourse that Kubrick pursues, and it feels somewhat disconnected from the context.. The director's pessimism is not best expressed here."
Still, a great film that has set a precedent..

A bit of everything exaggerated..
Peter Weir The Truman Show

Good starting idea, but I don't really like this film, and I don't consider it one of Weir's best. A less predictable and more "cursed" ending (like Truman choosing to remain imprisoned, for example) would have made it more impactful. Well done to everyone, anyway.

But are all the reviewed films five stars?? We're a bit too generous; if that were true, we’d be living in a cinematic paradise.. This film is a letdown, the story is nice, but the rest has the same effect as a plate of cement: it flattens you.
