Him And Love Said No - The Greatest Hits 1997-2004

ashanti, you're mistaken... I only explained the disastrous consequences of these operations, without judging you as a poser or criticizing those who listen to it (also because this music can only be listened to in my opinion; feeling it inside oneself seems impossible, unless you have a totally stereotyped and artificial conception of yourself. If you study classical literature, good for you; I've been studying these topics for a lifetime but I certainly didn’t come here to boast about it. Just let me say this: gothic, as well as the elegiac tones in music, belongs to a different realm, and this review misleads inexperienced people (just like reviews that claim Marilyn Manson does satanic rock, designed to intensify the reputation of a bogeyman that he has skillfully created over the years among the decent society).

The review is very well written, but I believe the language adopted by the dear writer known as Ashanti is completely out of place and unsuitable for describing a band that overflows with clichés like an overfilled pot in their songs... We must realize that inexperienced people read these things and then become passionate about the dark-adolescent genre when this type of music has over twenty years of experience behind it. These reviews help to increase the number of fans of these pseudo-gothic realities, making them think, "Oh, there's someone who thinks like me, who loves HIM, how nice!" Just think, I know a girl who only listens to hip-hop and came to tell me that the latest singles by Valo and his associates are beautiful. That's who HIM might appeal to—tacky people tired of certain kinds of banality and all too ready to dive into another kind of banality... That said, regarding the actual value of the band, I agree with Sotanaht; the first two albums were listenable, then the quality gradually diminished (if there was ever any). A few salvageable singles and nothing more... Finally, Ashanti, sorry, but I can't give you more than 1. Have you ever read an elegy? It takes quite a bit of courage to compare a poetic composition of that kind to a trash like Valo's lyrics...

but I reviewed the album...in any case, it's a separate episode, there are others, especially those played on the piano, which are infinitely moving

Well, then why do you vote with a 1 if you haven't even listened to the album in its entirety? It's a bit strange behavior, don't you think?

Is it possible that, noticing the fact that many who, as you say, "know something about music" have expressed a positive opinion, it's you who might have some issues with a somewhat narrow mindset to consider that Italy can occasionally produce some small talents? And this is said by someone who doesn't listen to much pop at all, so I didn't write the review to exalt yet another commercial hoax pushed by the usual record label, but to highlight how true talent can be appreciated elsewhere too...

I quote a sentence from L'Aura regarding the inspiration for this album: "I met a person whom I unknowingly called Demian. His name wasn't actually that, and I don’t even know why I thought to call him that. I was speechless when he told me that Demian was actually his favorite book. He gifted it to me, and after reading it, I realized that the book touched on themes I was exploring in my songs. It’s a book about a boy who grows up in a very Catholic family with a great sensitivity to good things. He gets into the worst troubles to discover for himself who he is, and he encounters strange, magical characters, gurus who teach him many things. That’s why I wanted to create a special cover for the album: both the front and back covers are essential. It’s a portrait made by a Canadian artist based on one of my photos, and the outlines and signs on the cover are all specific, magical symbols.” And again: "...I found that Demian represents me fully: I also seek comparisons and feel within myself the battle between good and evil during this period of personal growth. Just like Sinclair, the young and restless protagonist of the book.” After high school, I had to (unfortunately and bitterly) abandon German literature, so I haven't had the chance to learn more about the author... maybe in a free moment, I will read something.

I thank everyone for the compliments... and I want to mention here an important fact that was overlooked in the review: the aura was indeed inspired by the novel by Herman Hesse!

Do you understand what I’m talking about? It doesn’t seem like it… failed! And don’t think that I’m giving you a one or two just because I have a preconceived notion.
