Well, listen, I didn't experience Miles Davis (thankfully, or I would at least be in my sixties), but it seems to me that he often shunned the playing styles of other jazz musicians of his time to seek a path more fitting for him. Keeping in mind that this is just my opinion (which is open to change if proven wrong), you can't deny that Davis "launched" modal jazz, which had been played by no one (or very few) before. Please let me know what you think, because I'm not looking for a debate, but rather a desire to expand my understanding of things I'm not really knowledgeable about. Cheers.
