I listened to him, good, in the delta tradition. If he spent his life wandering, maybe I even heard him when I lived in Munich. Between Marienplatz and Stachus, there were many street musicians.

I Left Lane Cruiser really appeal to me, and this album seems interesting too.

There is no doubt, in my opinion, that Oldham is in a class of his own. He is a true genius, one of the most significant artists of the last 10 - 15 years. I want to revisit the discussion we had a few days ago about Sting's statement that rock is dead. I agree with you when you say it's not true because we are alive, so it can't die. (It was more or less like that.) However, compared to the 50s, 60s, and 70s, great talents today are increasingly rare. The reason might be that the entire musical landscape has already been explored in every context and under every circumstance, so the space for today's musicians is becoming more and more limited... or maybe the reasons are different, I don’t know. The fact remains that (I stick to ballads) the Dylans, Youngs, Tom Petty, Gene Clark, Jackson Browne, Fred Neil, Stills, Robbie Robertson, and I also include Van Morrison are no longer around. Rock is not dead, for sure, but it was better a few years ago.

Great, I re-listened to the album. As for the three ballads I've already mentioned that you didn't like, I fully agree with Lewis's description of them. "Real desire" and "my last mistake" don't appeal to me either; I believe you were referring to these when you wrote that they smell of mildew. To me, the CD has some inconsistencies; it deserves 4 stars.

I've only listened to them a couple of times, but I think I can say that the best tracks are "Trouble Weighs A Ton," "Whispered Words," or "When The Night Comes" – delicate rock blues ballads that really remind me of Will Oldham. Other songs, while good, seem to be weighed down by elaborate arrangements. The album is in line with the best of the Black Keys, but I won’t rate it because a couple of listens aren’t enough. PS. I've already heard "My Last Mistake," or it sounds very much like something I’ve heard before.

Historical importance alone does not guarantee quality; just think of the Sex Pistols or the Damned, for example. Historical importance can also belong to groups or individual artists that are little known; "Family" and "Love" are examples, even though many on DeBaser are familiar with them, among non-passionate people they are practically unknown.

More famous than important, the artist overall.

Smith was a major musical phenomenon, singer, poet, composer. However, while I consider this album a little gem, I've never seen her as an outstanding artist, more famous than important. "Gloria" feels like a different song compared to Van Morrison's, and it's awesome. The review is so-so, even though the style resembles that of Melissa, which I liked a lot.

I remember that the only time I saw Max Stefani on TV in the '80s, he said that his favorite Italian band was the Gaznevada. (Stefani is the director of Mucchio) I've never been particularly interested in them, due to my deplorable intolerance-prejudice towards Italian rock bands. I've listened to them here and there, without getting excited, maybe this is the right time for me to buy their music.

I saw the Police a couple of times, once in Bologna and the other time in Milan (if I remember correctly). In Milan, they had the Cramps opening for them, who were booed, and in Bologna, it was Graham Parker (assuming my memory isn't playing tricks on me). I preferred the Cramps and Parker, but people were drooling over Sting and company. I have to say the early Police weren't bad, "Message in a Bottle" and a couple of others are nice, but I've never been a fan. As for Mudhoney, they were mentioned in a review of Little Feat, and overall I prefer the latter, but "This Gift" is a great song. Of Nirvana, I really love "Unplugged in New York."
