The Stills-Young Band Long May you Run

I've always considered Crosby a bit inferior to both, even the most beautiful compositions signed within CSN&Y also bear Stills' signature. Furthermore, in his stunning album "If I Could Only Remember My Name," he benefited from the important collaboration of some members of the Grateful Dead, although this doesn't diminish his merits. I don't like it.

Good composer, he often reminds me of Elton John, but, in my opinion, the Brit is more talented as a songwriter.

donjunio, since you know both Stills and Young well, I'd like to ask for your personal opinion on which of the two was the most inspired (as a composer) in the 60s and 70s. Personally, at the time, I was "Stillsian" with Buffalo, his compositions were the best, the same goes for CSN&Y. Not to mention his beautiful double album with Manassas, and the super-session with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. Even his solo albums from the 70s were almost all good, up until Thoroughfare Gap, which I would exclude. Then his creative vein quickly ran dry, while Young continued (I’ve read well) for many more years. Cheers.

I endorse donjunio's comment.

Rikardo, even Young is Canadian, it’s obvious that we’re talking about ā€œsubjective tastesā€ as you said; tastes are always subjective. If we’re not discussing numbers but opinions, there is no objective truth, because we’re indeed talking about tastes, and these change according to historical periods and also locations. For example, in the Tonga Islands the ideal woman is fat, while here it’s not. If there were an objective truth, we could say that so-and-so is the most beautiful woman in the world, or that Caravaggio was the greatest painter of all time. Fortunately, that doesn’t exist, so we can taste different flavors without anyone coming to bother you.

Neil Young is certainly not a pushover, but for me, Petty is better. VU is right, there’s no way to determine who the best really is, because it’s all about taste, and you can’t argue about that.

I don't know the album, but in general, I agree with what you've written.
