Really awful album!! Back in the day, a friend lent it to me, raving about it. But my curiosity clashed with a truly terrible record. I don’t understand what could be beautiful about this album. Sometimes, he’s just outright annoying when he sings.

But I don't understand: if a musician tries to do different things, it's like "oh, they're not what they used to be, they've sold out..." (as if a musician would enjoy staying in a niche...). If they stay true to themselves: "Oh, but they always do the same things, they lack creativity...". In my opinion, the Marlene are a perfect example of how one can evolve in their music while consistently producing high-quality work.

I quote Lord in every comma, but limiting the Beatles to a mere social phenomenon while denying their importance in the history of music seems quite wrong to me. If we really want to dig into their early songs, despite all their naiveté, they are a direct emanation of '50s rock and roll (listen to Live at The BBC to believe it), so I don’t understand why Chuck Berry is acceptable while the Beatles are not! Secondly: Many examples of psychedelic music contemporary to the Beatles are cited, but I wonder: apart from a few chosen ones (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane...), was the rest true glory? I find the electronic experiments of the German school much more interesting.

@Neu! what you wrote also seems to me like a copy-paste from the Scaruffi site; you could have at least been a little more personal…

@Gigi: It really seems absurd and at times childish to be saying "the first in line is the most important, the leader...". But what does that mean?? Where is it written?

Great review!! The album is magnificent and you explained it very well. I also don’t consider it a 5 but definitely a 4.5!!

@currahee: "Wild Life" to avoid?? But why do you all consider this album mediocre? For me, it's one of McCartney's peaks. The overall quality of that album is very high, just look at tracks like the title track, "Love is Strange," "Some People Never Know," "Tomorrow," and "Dear Friend." Regarding the rest of the discography to avoid, I agree, but "McCartney II" and "Memory Almost Full" aren't that bad in my opinion.

Melissa... it won't be... It's nonsense!! Come on, you can't apply that cover to see this thing, it's worse than those who saw McCartney's death in it!!

This album is McCartney's masterpiece from 2000, and surely Nigel Godrich's production played a crucial role. In "How Kind Of You," more than Beck's Sea Change, I hear echoes of Radiohead's Kid A ("Motion Picture Soundtrack"). Finally, regarding the Lennon-McCartney feud, I believe the latter has always been the more complete one from a musical standpoint. Sure, Lennon had those strokes of genius that allowed him to produce stunning albums like "Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine," but overall, McCartney had many more qualities.

Great album! But the best was yet to come a year later...
