Then there's an adjective that I hate. I NEVER use it in speech, and it doesn't appear even once in my 70 reviews. It's "beautiful," the adjective of the poor, the one that doesn't mean a damn thing and describes even less. "Beautiful" is no longer useful. Neither in art nor in cinema. The direction has been definitively different for years. You might as well say "ugly." Better "disgusting" or "what the hell is this" or "what a drag," definitely more effective and a starting point for a discussion. I quote Allen: "beauty has vanished at the turn of the century." God, how I love him.

I would paraphrase it to the kids hanged in Milan a few years ago. The work was anguishing, but someone climbed the tree to take down the horrid puppets. That is art that screams and evokes reactions. Who cares if it's beautiful or ugly, the important thing is that it stirs something. And if it moves you, then they've won.
