As usual, the truth is much less fanciful. Ted Danson's character, in the initial version, was supposed to shoot a commercial for a dog product in a scene, using a cardboard cutout of himself. That scene was later cut from the final version of the film, thus removing any reference to the cutout. In fact, the silhouette reappears more than once throughout the movie. Ted Danson is right next to it when the little girl's mother comes back to claim it; the cutout had been accidentally left near the window on set.
