Dolphy, you don’t need to call me "lei." I was conscious when I wrote this review. I feel like reiterating my version of the facts based on Hancock's previous works (not only as a leader). This work is definitely softer. It’s easy to misinterpret words, easy to misunderstand each other. The rustic sound is far from the polished nature of this work—in fact, it’s accurate. As far as I'm concerned, modal and acoustic aren’t that far apart. Acoustics aren’t just electric. I see it as a possible sense of depth in sound. The Hubbard-Davis comparison doesn’t seem reckless to me. The qualities of Hubbard aren’t up for debate. The comparison is "earthy good" versus divinity. The comparison is feasible in broad strokes because both are jazz trumpeters. Hubbard is academic, Miles is spontaneous. I could tell you this while crying. Let’s not criticize the perception of jazz. If you do your research, there are huge issues concerning genres, whose definitions are often debatable, as well as personal preferences. Don’t get stuck on a thematic variant or we’ll never get past it. Do you need to sift through and dust off the father of modal? Do you need some statement from a jazz critic musicologist to comfort my perspective?
From how I’ve evolved and informed myself, I don’t stray too far from the thought that hard bop and cool are very close. Help me out and tell me who, what, or when led you to these assertions. Regarding Hancock, I tell you that YES, he is creative, brilliant, but some of the things he did after this album have the merit of being genius and the flaw of being, in the long run, boring abortions. The difference lies in the number of times you listen to something, and each time it reveals itself as pleasure and discovery. Anything else?
