Le Orme Smogmagica

Recently, I've re-evaluated it quite a bit. "Los Angeles," an absolute masterpiece, not a wrong note, not a dull moment, with an insane instrumental ending. "Amico di Ieri" is also beautiful (when I was 5 or 6 years old, it was one of my favorites by Le Orme). "Laserium Floyd," a great instrumental, a stunning immense expanse; the others are a bit, how can I say, strange. I think I can now give it a 4. It's an eccentric, ironic album, almost hard rock at points. The fact remains that like all other albums by Le Orme, whether good or bad, it is unique.

Dave Grohl? Then people might go and speak ill of folks like Ringo Starr, who had no technique but style (he sometimes opens the hi-hat on the snare too). And Barriemore Barlow from Jethro Tull? My goodness, what a drummer! Just listen to him in the musical interlude of the song Minstrel in the Gallery; the roof could come down. Back then, he had a blue Vistalite without resonant heads.

I would also like to say that Roger Taylor from Queen is a great drummer because if listened to carefully, he does things that only he does (not that they are impossible to do, on the contrary, but no one has ever done it like him), like the early opening of the hi-hat on the snare hit and the closing right after (but be careful, not at the end of the bar, a sixteenth note before, now I have to count them). But on debaser, they would tear me apart, so I won’t say it. Many opened the hi-hat on the snare (Phil Collins, the one from Aerosmith, Di Cioccio...) but no one like Taylor did: go read the Wikipedia page, it explains it better.

There's also "Life is real," which isn't so bad after all.

Yes, indeed, it does resemble (in a distant way) the set of Bruford from the late '70s. The cymbal in question is a 'lid', I don't think it's worth more than 9 euros, I never use Hollywood mechanics, at least if I break those of Tamburo, I’m not breaking something historical. A guy I know told me that D'Orazio plays 1 out of 7 concerts, and when he saw him play, he said that the resonant heads of the bass drum were still and never vibrated (usually they vibrate a bit, don’t they?). Moreover, the other night I saw him on RAI, and he was hitting certain rolls... The fact is that he was moving awkwardly and was out of sync with the playback (can we say that about the drums too?): the scene was embarrassing, plus the sound of the toms seemed like that of the '80s Simmons (Invisible Touch?), which convinced me of his "not playing."

My rig consists of a bass drum, a floor tom, two toms (up to this point in maple, all from Tamburo, which was the best at the music center), one tom (Ludwig, lacking a resonant head), and three roto-toms (6-8-10) placed directly above the toms, so when you look at it from the front, you see not only the bass drum and two toms but also the roto-toms on top. Cymbals: a crash, a china, and a 'nail' cymbal from the very early '60s that I use as a ride (yes, I don't have a ride!). It has a sound that, if you hear it, makes you say: yes, this is definitely the Lord playing. The hi-hat, also from the early '60s, has an incredible sound (in my personal opinion): nothing to do with the hiss produced by modern hi-hats, it has a very full sound (when I record and listen back, it reminds me of the early Queen). Hardware: Hollywood, Tamburo, Ludwig (all stuff I’ve picked up here and there).

In the photo on your profile, you're playing a snare with wooden hoops. What’s different about that? And above all, don’t they get dinged up after a while?

Beating skins and resonant skins, damn, I have to fix that. Well, I still have a long way to go. Anyway, it seems to me that the melodic toms sound like Roto-toms (I have some to extend the duration, but I have them in a 'heretical' position, above the three toms). But Di Cioccio has been playing that drum set since '74, while Dei Rossi since late '73 (a small record). I also saw the Pooh in vintage footage, they loved to show off a great cream-colored Ludwig and two bass drums: it doesn't seem to me that they've ever used it properly...
