This review of mine shouldn’t be taken as a crusade against Depeche Mode; I’m the first to admit that Gahan and company have influenced the musical world for two decades. However, it’s clear that after Ultra, the group experienced a disheartening decline. To get straight to the point, Exciter is a mediocre album (at best), and Playing the Angel just barely makes the cut. After so much brilliance, only a few flickering lights remain.
