Anathema A Natural Disaster

Ah, between the lines... I saw Anathema live as the opening act for Porcupine Tree... really not bad, the music sounds just like on the album (no distortions or off-notes). I was a bit annoyed by Vincent's natural tendency to be, as we say in Rome, a show-off (read: "how cool I am"), even though he does his job impeccably. Truly a good performance. Then Porcupine Tree took the stage, and there the libido flowed copiously and in abundance. Bye guys... Logic :)

And that's how the Anathema decided to mimic the Porcupine Tree... and, in my opinion, they didn't stray too far. However, compared to the PT, this CD lacks something to make it a true masterpiece. It's definitely a worthy album that deserves recognition... but it's a masterpiece that missed the mark. Great review Zion, among the favorites.

Wow, I never noticed that......you’ve sparked such curiosity in me! As soon as I can, I’m going to listen to the track again :)

And yes Socra, it’s clear that you’ve read my personal profile :) To tell the truth, I was actually about to write this review myself... but I didn't do it for fear of NOT being objective enough. I saw PT live in Milan, and listening to them is like hitting PLAY on the CD player. PERFECT! No flaws, no off notes, high technical level... music elevated to the power. The opening band, Anathema, wasn't bad at all, but they were quickly forgotten when the instruments were picked up and expertly played by the Wilson & Co. FINALLY Socrates... you are one of my favorite Derecensori... your reviews never escape my reading. :)

Well, in comparison to In Absentia, the album is definitely more interesting, even though it winks at the U.S. market. There's a return to the sounds of Signify, and Barbieri's keyboards create those gloomy yet celestial atmospheres that are spectacular. It lacks the elaborate choral pieces that made In Absentia better. I find Shallow (a feeling of déjà vu) and Lazzarus (coincidentally, the tracks picked for the U.S. market) to be decidedly uninteresting. The rest of the album is practically a masterpiece (first and foremost, Arriving). It should be noted that in this album, the drumming returns to the levels of Maitland (the previous drummer)... has Harrison finally decided to play more creatively? Lastly, Edwin's hypnotic bass remains an undisputed gem... FANTASTIC... great Socr :)

When you listen to a Porcu record, you go through a series of phases:
1) the anticipation of a sure masterpiece
2) the denial of that expectation, meaning there’s no trace of the marvelous things I had in mind
3) but this record isn’t bad
4) NO NO IT'S A MASTERPIECE!!!!
5) I can't listen to anything else for 5 straight months!
This is what happens to a PT fan… and I, fiercely, am one. Great review Socrates… one of my favorites… IMMEDIATELY.

it's definitely intriguing! to be honest, it annoys me that they propose music with lyrics not in Italian (maybe it's just my impression, but it's often assumed that Italians are incapable of appreciating alternative music… could that be why people sing in English? Or perhaps it's to sell more?... a post on the forum might be in order!). Anyway, if the product is so warmly recommended, I can't help but respond to the call from the good Perez..... OK PEREZ you’ve won, I'm already looking for the CD. In the meantime, could you put up some samples? :)

But why does the good Kravitz only help female singers in production? I have a feeling that the good Lenny has hormones to spare (of course, if I had his earnings, I would sell a bit of hormones too... OR NOT?). :)

"Waters has invested music with paranoia," it's true. But this is the expression of the one who wrote this music; whether it's liked or not is another matter. Let me give you an example... Munch is a painter known mainly for the famous scream, and the scream is perhaps not despair and paranoia. One could say that a psychiatrist would have done better than Munch... but he wouldn't have been Munch! Now whether Munch is a genius or not can be agreed upon or not. What remains of him are paintings that speak of anguish, which may or may not resonate with my feelings. It matters little if the press claims that Waters is a failure when in my daily experience his anguishes align with my soul. When that happens, I think the one who has given me emotions is a genius. I find RW's solo work absolutely interesting... and it moves me. That has no value. I hug you. LOGIC

Indeed, Zuckina makes an interesting point: what do you think is Vasco's "growth" path in this album? Of course, I'm speaking from my very personal feelings, and if someone considers this album a treasure of national culture, they are free to do so. I just want to understand from those who say it's a step in Vasco's artistic career and an evolution of his, what kind of evolution we are talking about. This, I must emphasize, is not an inquisition nor a football stadium... we are expressing opinions. Personally, I find this album empty both musically and in its lyrics. In short, as I've already said, it sounds like a record deal (destined for easy sales and quick cash). My VERY PERSONAL judgment, for better or worse.
