I don’t know what you mean by banal riffs, but the riffs in "Atomic Punk" and "I’m The One" seem so different from any other riff prior to this album that they are, by definition, not banal. And (as for the subsequent works) the riffs in "Mean Street," "Unchained," and "Man On A Mission" seem anything but banal. And come on, but in hard rock, talking about banal riffs is ridiculous: the riffs of Black Sabbath all seem so alike that they sound like the same thing, yet Iommi is considered (by me as well) the greatest riff writer, along with Jimmy Page.

It doesn't seem to me that things can be separated and that you can take only what you want. This album anticipated the sound of countless bands for almost two decades (whether these bands were long-haired groups with lightning-fast solos or not is of little consequence). Within the hard rock landscape, this album was a true breath of fresh air, and not just technically. This was the breakthrough album, the one that symbolically closed the '70s and opened the '80s (whether the '70s were undoubtedly superior to the '80s is again of little importance). Many noticed this shift: Black Sabbath even broke up partly because of Van Halen. They realized they were no longer keeping up with the times, and that this opening act was being more acclaimed by the audience than Black Sabbath themselves (it's no coincidence that Ozzy chose Randy Rhoads after his time with the Sabbath). No matter how vulgar, exhibitionistic, etc., etc., it cannot be denied that they were the first to make a certain type of music, and whether you like it or not, it matters little.

Banality? But had you heard anything even remotely comparable to Eruption before 1978? And anyone who played even remotely like him? When this record came out, it wasn't so banal; people didn’t even believe it was an electric guitar, the sound was that new.

Well come on, that statement is at least pretty bold.

If we want to be completely accurate, we should look at the last free concert by the Stones, compare it with this one by Genesis, and see that the Stones had over 1,500,000 people in Rio de Janeiro.

If the importance of a concert is measured by the number of attendees, as Mauroprog argues, then Avril Lavigne has outperformed Jeff Beck, who had 5,000 people in Pistoia, and Bob Dylan, who only had 3,000 in Turin, not to mention countless others.
