It's too easy to shoot down metal as a garbage genre just because there are distortions, bloody lyrics, and clichés galore (which, by the way, also exist in media-favored genres like death and black). If the world hadn't gotten scared of metal, we’d be here criticizing the entire '80s new wave as "shit" and brit pop as a crappy genre. These are just points of view; sometimes it's better to hear Araya screaming "Raiiininnnggg Blooooodddd" than a Battiato giving sex lessons to a twenty-two-year-old of our time.
