Nightwish Dark Passion Play
Voto:
I don't think mainstream bands write 13-minute songs. And then, what does mainstream mean? Selling out due to envy among metal musicians who juggle ten thousand projects to make ends meet. Still, I believe this is a good album, especially for the breath of fresh air represented by Anette and the brighter musical atmosphere. The first song doesn't reach the heights of "Ghost Love Score," but it flows beautifully, like the rest of the album. I emphasize the beauty of the more folk or Celtic-tinged songs, such as "The Islander," "Last of the Wilds," and "Meadows of Heaven," even though my favorite remains "7 Days to the Wolves," truly intense and sung masterfully.

What a sad movie...notice the 3 locations in total.

The Blood Countess, by Valentine Penrose. One of the few novels about Countess Bathory.
Ermanno Olmi Il Mestiere Delle Armi

First vision: an incessant struggle against sleep. Second vision: greatly appreciated, also because in the meantime I had taken a modern history exam and understood the historical context, which accounts for 90% of the film.
David Lynch Inland Empire
Voto:
What a beautiful film. Lynch says he will never reveal the meaning of the film so that everyone can have their say. I gathered that this film is about a woman watching a movie in which she acts in a film that tells her life story. This film intersects with her original Polish one and with a subsequent Polish woman watching herself act in the movie. Some speak of parallel universes opening in a cigarette hole, of Laura Dern and her Polish alter ego ultimately reuniting. Well, the plot is secondary in this film; what matters is that between fiction and reality, Lynch makes no distinctions. There is no boundary between our identity and the various projections we have of ourselves. Everything is fiction, everything is role interpretation, everything is fantasy just like in Mulholland Drive. Thank you, Lynch, do you know how many evenings can be spent discussing your film? You’ve given us a great conversation topic.
Marco Masini T'innamorerai

There are two things about Masini that I can't stand: the castrated voice with a throat scorched by sulfuric acid, and the tendency to wallow in self-pity and evoke sympathy.
Sirenia Nine Destinies And A Downfall
Voto:
Brodvik is gone, just like the entire crew of Sirenia has been replaced, because Veland is an egocentric madman. He was kicked out by Tristania for that. His logic is "I do everything and you obey!" In fact, Veland, in order to have absolute power at least in Sirenia, writes everything himself, arranges everything himself, and plays all the instruments. He only uses the singer, of course, and employs the other members for live performances. Sirenia is therefore a band in name only.
Sirenia Nine Destinies And A Downfall

The more I listen to it, the more this album intrigues me, making me want to reassess Sirenia. Moreover, the production is excellent, including the sound quality. It seems like an easy-listening album, but upon closer inspection, you can notice many refinements. The carefully placed choirs, some keyboards imitating an oboe or other orchestral instruments, all clashing or merging with dance inserts like in "my mind's eye" and with more modern and pop sounds. Can pop meet metal? When it’s of high quality, yes. After all, experimentation these days falters, and Sirenia have discovered a territory all their own.

Theatre Of Tragedy Storm
Voto:
Here’s what the theatre shouldn't have done: ditch Liv and merge the past with the present. The new voice is nice but lacks the expressiveness of Liv, who could range from the gasps of an opium addict to the winks of pop assembly. And the music is a bit too repetitive, a mix of commercial gothic like Evanescence and electronic hints. However, the theatre had reached the heights of gothic and discovered new territories in electronics, and this album feels underwhelming for this reason.
