You’re right, embryo... with "psychedelia has a sound," I meant that it’s recognizable... grunge, on the other hand, isn’t... other genres have a certain sound that unites them... Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, if you listen to them... although very different... you say they do hard rock... or at least it would have been so in the 70s (since now with all the other metal classifications it becomes more difficult...) for grunge it’s not the same... they lump together totally different bands in one pot... what I said before was just an example... like saying... << oh look... these guys do hard rock >>... << these guys do metal (whether it’s power, death, or whatever, you can tell it’s metal) >>... << these are psychedelic (and they could be the Grateful Dead, the Flaming Lips, or even more extreme bands) >>... regarding Pearl Jam... even though I don’t like almost anything of theirs, I agree with embryo... and then Green River are among my favorites from that scene... if by grunge you mean a certain trend that came out after Nevermind, then I agree... but if you’re talking to me about "grunge music," no...

@pixies...you're absolutely right...but what if I told you...<< I've formed a new band...you know...we play grunge >>...what would you think?

@franci...indeed, grunge began to be labeled as such in 1991...or at least before that it wasn't a widely used term...

@panic...I’m totally fine with genres...hard rock has a sound...metal too...psychedelia another one...and so on...but grunge doesn’t have a precise one...there isn’t even a factor that unites all the bands...musical or otherwise...it’s a trend...a term thrown out there by journalists...until ’91 grunge didn’t even exist...then the Nirvana and the others arrive and bang...suddenly it’s discovered that even Dinosaur Jr were doing grunge...that they were also doing grunge...that the Melvins were doing grunge too...that Mudhoney were doing grunge...that a ton of other bands were doing grunge too...I mean...does it make sense? Not for me...I will never tire of repeating that grunge is something imaginary...I honestly would abolish it as a term...

in my opinion, there is no such thing when it comes to music genre... I mean... give me an example of a grunge song... as for fashion or movement, maybe (but even there I would have my doubts)... regarding Silverchair, they may be nice to listen to... but I'm criticizing what’s behind it more than the music itself...

yes yes sure...Soundgarden...Pearl Jam...Nirvana...Alice in Chains...all groups with the same sound...that friendly played grunge...but please! grunge never existed...it was a phantom trend...I don’t want to discredit anyone...I’m just saying that these bands suck because they rode (or were made to ride) the "post-grunge" wave...I too, with my friends at fifteen, had fun playing Smells...but that was it...these guys got noticed and they made a record with tight songs but not too much...polished production...anyway, they reached their lowest point with Freak Show and I’m even surprised that Albini produced an album for them (which I don’t remember)...just like Bush...same dough...

@panic...did they have it tough? But they are so fake...they just took advantage of the "grunge" moment to launch themselves...they're idiots...their name fits right in with those I've mentioned...who the hell cares if they made the album at 15...who knows how many bands were playing Nirvana-like stuff in basements...and by saying that I don't know a damn thing about grunge, you've admitted yourself that you don't know a damn thing...grunge doesn't exist...

I only have the self-titled album, which is beautiful... I think I should expand my Tortoise discography with this one... or not? :D
