Beatrice Antolini Big Saloon

this album is far superior to what is usually produced in Italy. more than Björk, in my opinion it has something of the style of Jenny Wilson, Roisin Murphy, Isobel Campbell... really excellent references nonetheless. what I like is that an absolutely commendable naturalness shines through: nothing copied, nothing pre-packaged. has a genius been born?

Just to mention one that really seems noteworthy in Italy: listen to "cptgaio," the recently reviewed album by Beatrice Antolini... it's really something else.

Whoa cptgaio, it may be true... but I swear I didn’t dismiss it quickly; I did everything to digest it, trying to excuse it and telling myself that the references (not only to Elisa, it’s true: also to Amos, but maybe even to Jeff Buckley?) were something only I could hear! Maybe she was a sincere artist, but after so many listens, I have reached my own, very personal and debatable conclusion: for me, it’s just a clever trick, although I don’t rule out that it might find its place, sooner or later, in my little heart ;-)

nono cptgaio, never been original, but definitely more honest musically than now... anyway, the fact that L'Aura makes people talk about Elisa means that, in any case, Elisa has left something of herself. I've always found her likable, but regardless of that, I don't like artists who are not very original like L'Aura, especially when they pretend to be super original...

The aura is a special case... one cannot say she isn't talented; quite the opposite. The girl has an expressive ability that is undoubtedly noteworthy. What has always convinced me less is the music she produces. Again, one cannot say it's bad, on the contrary! But I can't quite place it... too many obvious influences come off as almost annoying and feel like a clever commercial move. Preferring her to Elisa (especially the latest Elisa) is purely a personal matter, but it remains evident a (in my opinion, shameless) attempt to emulate her persona. And I’m not just talking about the music: I’m mostly referring to attitude. When she's interviewed, it seems like she even mimics Toffoli's accent, and that vibe between shyness and alternative that characterizes Elisa’s persona. Personally, I can't stand something like that, even more so because, besides imitating Elisa, she does it almost better than the original (which stings a bit...).

I vote for the artist, not the album, which I haven't listened to.

I've never been able to stand her, too much 'Italian melody' for my taste. She's always given me the impression of being, as you say, anachronistic, but not consciously, not with that flair that pays homage to the past... in my opinion, she has a rather 'old' taste, that somewhat clichéd flavor of San Remo Italian-ness that goes crazy on radioitalia... plus, I don't love her slightly shrill voice (and provincial vibe). Oh my, I really went hard on her... poor Mariella! Of course, if a musician participates in musicfarm to revitalize their career, they also have to know that they will attract criticism from people like me! ;-)

Well Björk, I'm very happy about this moderate position. You know I'm coming to see you in Codroipo? I can't wait!!!
