Low Live in Milan, 20/4/2005

In Florence, the opening act for Radiohead was Low. Was it the same band? I don't know, but I also remember them being a bit boring.

We had already talked about this film, if I remember correctly, in the cinema forum. I didn’t like it. I recognize De Maria’s great love for Pazienza, but the film ultimately is a rather incoherent and forced union of some of his stories. Moreover, in my opinion, the characters were not properly portrayed by the director. Zanardi above all, whose complexity is difficult to capture. Zanna is not a man; he is a mask that represents hate (that nose mimics the commedia dell'arte). Zanna is what we hate and envy at the same time; he is contradiction. None of this appears in the film. A similar discourse applies to Petra and Colas, characters much more complex than they seem in the film. The relationships between the three are poorly defined. Likewise, Pentothal is a doppelganger of Paz, but De Maria’s interpretation does not do him justice, also losing the vision (in every sense) that is anything but stereotypical in the 77 present in the illustrations. Giusto Fiabeschi is well framed in his buffoonery, but he was a marginal character that was little developed in Paz’s works (if I remember correctly, he is the one who has to take the exam on cinema to avoid military service). That said, the film should be respected because it wasn't easy to complete, and as I mentioned, it shows a sincere love, but beyond that, there is little, due to a very weak structure.

However, from the perspective of social recognition, it's not a trivial difference. Anyway, excuse me, but I’m pulling myself out of the discussion also because now I no longer know who I'm talking to ... another problem of not authenticating ... keep exercising your freedom, which I really don't understand the meaning of. Bye

This was not the speech. You’re making a forced parallel in my opinion. Amina's situation is terrible; no one denies it, quite the opposite. But the fact that things are worse elsewhere, that even the most basic rights are not recognized, doesn’t mean that everything here is fine, that there are no problems to discuss and address. Or not? Do you think everything is fine? Do you think it makes no sense to talk about discrimination even in the West? I'm sorry, I disagree. For me, everything is not fine. There is still much to do, and it's not little. In other contexts - like Amina's - there is indeed EVERYTHING to be done. I don't understand the need for a parallel to conclude that since things are much worse elsewhere, everything here is fine; it seems like a dubious line of reasoning. As for the rest, my request for you to authenticate was only related to the possibility of discussing this privately since this space should be dedicated to the reviewed album. If you had authenticated, I would have replied privately and also suggested opening a dedicated forum. Don’t want to authenticate? Fine, you’ll read my response here. No problem for me; you're the one with the issue of validating your comments.

It is not true that there is little to discuss regarding the issue of discrimination and sexism in the West. The problem exists even though progress has been made. There are girls who cannot find jobs because they may pose a problem for the company (maternity risk), just to give an example; in many sectors, there are barriers that are difficult to overcome (freelancing, for instance). But it is clear that if we move to the East, we have very different problems (just read the newspaper this morning...terrifying what happened...but wasn't democracy supposed to have arrived?). The fact that things are worse elsewhere, however, does not mean that our issues are completely resolved. There is still work to be done, a lot of work to be done. Elsewhere, on the other hand, they have yet to start. (By the way, I don't understand why you don't authenticate yourselves; what's the problem with logging in? If you did, we could discuss these matters privately or decide together to open a dedicated forum on the topic without straying too far from the review.) Regards.

So, while I agree with Frantz's comment and have fond memories of Pompidou, I wanted to say that this morning I dusted off "The Piano Concerto" by Nyman, derived from the music of this film - Debaser also serves to rediscover the old records in your CD collection. While listening, I reread the booklet after many years and learned that three of the four main themes of the music are not by Nyman but come from Scottish folk music from the 17th and 18th centuries. For the record, I’m including the titles here: "Bonny Winter's Noo Awa," "Flowers of the Forest," and "Bonnie Jean." Bye.
