Madlib The Beat Conductor EP

Beautiful Zion, but unfortunately curiosity isn't enough for me; choices have to be made. Besides a mortgage, it would take another lifetime to listen to everything. For now, I’ll set rap aside, unless your reviews finally manage to sway me :)

I don't know him, but intrigued by your review and the references you mentioned, I went online to find more information and found countless praises for this pianist. He seems like a true gem, and at this point, including the samples is a must! Stefanet, it wouldn't be bad to read your music collection as well, come on, add a few titles. Bye, p.s. the cover is beautiful too.

Well... I actually liked this little disk, because it is indeed a little disk, limited to the few expectations I had of it. Summer pop, sunny yet not original, but also not shamelessly conforming to reference models, with a fairly defined logic, more subtle than flaccid overall, and it doesn't necessarily mean this is a flaw. Unpretentious music, sincere, without commitments, that has its own dignity in being a bit naïve and adolescent. Expecting it to go beyond that doesn't make much sense. Just as I don't see a significant musical leap compared to the King of Convenience. Hi (one extra point for the review for recalling an inexplicable mystery)

It's true - to some extent - what you say, primiballi. Originality is certainly not his strong suit, and the references are at times almost explicit; I think, for example, of the piece "Tempo," which shares more than one affinity with "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck. Regarding the lyrics, I would differentiate between the first and second album; in the first, there was something appreciable in this regard (the idea of the sea of Crotone), while in the second, on the contrary, one senses - I reiterate - the craftsmanship. As for his pianism, I wouldn't criticize it outright; certainly, the comparison with Jarrett, however one might interpret it, does not exist for me. It's true he has the lounge piano style (which he maintained for years), but it's not a bluff in this respect, and he manages to prove it live. Nothing transcendental, of course. Finally, I completely disagree with the claim that he adopts a look reminiscent of Benedetti Michelangeli. That comparison has as much value as the one made with Jarrett. Let's not blaspheme. Aside from the differences in messy hair and questionable taste in shirt choices, a mere mustache doesn't come close to matching the elegance and poise of a gentleman like Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Ciao.

Yes, very refined and well-crafted production, like a beautiful gift wrap, but inside the box there’s very little in this case. I also didn’t like the lyrics and some interpretations. In the previous album, there was a thread, a story, a soul; it was a work absorbed over time, whereas in this one there’s... craft. As for the piano touch, I’m not a technician, but honestly, it seems to me like an excessive comparison. Bye.

If it's true that this music "oozes '80s essence from every note," as Frantz also confirms, then I really think I'll pass. But afterwards, I'll listen to the samples to see if they can change my mind. Bye :)

A harmless three-debaseriano fits perfectly for this album, which for me is now just an adolescent memory, nothing more.

To compare him to Jarrett is somewhat blasphemous; he's good, yes, but let's not exaggerate. The first album was certainly better than this one, but it's also understandable because it encapsulated years of experiences. This one feels more bland to me. He is, however, a very likeable character, especially live. I saw one of his concerts a few years ago, and he really knows how to hold the stage (maybe thanks to the long stint he did in piano bars for years). There were very few of us that night, and we had a lot of fun; by the way, he was accompanied by some fine musicians. One interesting fact: if I remember correctly, he is a cousin of Rino Gaetano.

I listened to the album last Saturday, a fleeting listen that certainly doesn’t allow for a clear and definitive idea of the record, but that little didn’t convince me. In fact, I too got the impression of a continuity with their previous two albums (which I didn’t like either) and, like the illustrious commentator before me, I also (imho) think they’ve somewhat lost their way and haven’t expressed themselves at the same level as the first two albums. Anyway, I'll listen to it again later, not endlessly, but at least I'll give it two chances ;) Regards.
