Certainly, comparisons must be made based on parameters and should have the character of homogeneity. What I meant to say is that these discussions are not necessarily just mental exercises and that de gustibus is not the only way to critically interpret things (ps I'm rooting for Palermo).

I initially dismissed Guccini for his voice, but then listening to him, I learned to appreciate it, connecting it to his words that can paint situations like few others. This is a really great album for me.

It is based on a precise analysis that compares the sonata form over time. Then, if someone doesn't like it (de gustibus), that's their problem, but we are talking about different planes. Discussions about musical forms and their evolutions are possible even beyond classical music. Coltrane didn't just innovate the sound of the sax, for example. Miles Davis with Kind of Blue made a musical revolution, for instance. What does all this have to do with de gustibus?

You keep mixing two planes that don’t necessarily have to be united. I mentioned Bernstein, who back in the 60s recognized in free jazz and the works of Brian Wilson important values of musical innovation; these were his analyses. This isn’t about "de gustibus," there isn’t only "de gustibus," you can’t generalize everything with the phrase "they're all bullshit," it’s the banality and the presumptuous lightness of this phrase that is bullshit. I think that without Bach and without Mozart, all the music we know would be different. Saying that "classical" "doesn't have the variety of sound that music composed with electricity can have" is another bullshit. But what does that even mean? Have you ever heard a real orchestra live?
