Dear Lorenzovic, here’s another musician who has captivated me over the years (though not like our Bill Evans, who remains the greatest of all for me). I must confess, quietly and a bit ashamed, that I haven’t been able to love this work. Over the last twenty years, Jarrett has released a series of literally "monumental" albums, including this one, but it’s precisely their grandeur and ambition that have somewhat overwhelmed me. In practice, in front of a work like this, I literally get lost. If I find the time, I’ll go listen to it again, but... I already know that after half an hour I’ll lose my focus. It’s too much for me.

If I had to mention memorable titles from this fantastic pianist, I would definitely say the brilliant "Facing You," then a lesser-known work to the general public, "Jasmine," which is a small great jewel. I would also bring up the much-maligned (at least by the more traditional and narrow-minded jazz critics) Koln Concert, which is still a splendid album. I would also mention the first two volumes of the Standard Trio and the lovely "Inside Out." His discography is so vast...

Considering that I have some difficulty in loving the double-triple CD "monuments," and excluding the albums I’ve mentioned, if you have any particular works to suggest, I would take note and go listen to them again. Best regards.

Perhaps the European quartet, which you don’t mention but have surely listened to, could be the most interesting ensemble in your eyes (ears...). In particular, I believe “My Song,” full of dreamy melodies, along with “Personal Mountains,” stands out. I consider them to be roughly on the same level as “Belonging,” the debut album of the quartet, highly acclaimed by critics, and slightly bolder and more experimental in some lively tracks.

As for the Standard Trio, I find “Changeless” remarkable (at that stage it was not yet programmatically Standard and certainly not Live, as all the tracks are studio originals, each based on a single chord), in addition to “Still Live” and the unjustly underrated “Tribute,” alas both double albums... :). The singability that you seem to prefer is guaranteed in these two. As a curiosity, I would also recommend listening to “Tales Of Another,” the debut album of the formation, but rightfully credited to Gary Peacock, who was the leader of the session.

Solo piano: in my opinion, “Vienna” and “Paris” could captivate you as well, even though, as always, there’s an alternation between singable episodes and others that are more “closed” and reflective.

Then there’s the American Trio/Quartet, much more ‘jazzy’ in a broad sense, including the semi-free component, at least formally, of which at least “El Juicio” must be listened to.

Another interesting curiosity is the sole CBS album, namely “Expectations,” which is very varied atmospherically, even featuring strings in some tracks.

Aside from the ECM releases, all these albums can now be found for around 5 €. In this case, an interesting read could be the monographic summary pamphlet “Jazz Legends” by Editori Riuniti, which I honestly don’t know if it’s still in print, and which anyway stops at the beginning of the millennium.

    Best regards and happy listening!

PS: I remembered wrong, "Changeless" is taken from some American concerts in October 1987 (at a time when evidently our friend was obsessed with the drone), but it remains one of the most "strange" and hypnotic episodes of the Trio.

PPS: let's also include "The Cure," where, with no news in terms of repertoire, aside from an improvised original at the end, once again quite hypnotic, we witness the Trio perhaps at its best moment. Live at the Town Hall, 1990.
