Genesis: Selling England By The Pound
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
I don't know how to define it, I can't find the words. I'm having a hard time since I said that Foxtrot is the best. I had forgotten about this gem and the battle is tough.
Firth of Fifth is the best track on the album and you can tell just from the opening, a pseudo-instrumental, meaning it's not always featuring Peter's wonderful voice. Dancing with the Moonlight Knight, on the other hand, is very voice-driven. Then there's something to say about Battle of Epping Forest: to understand it, to savor it, it needs to be listened to.

Always been my favorite in the group along with Foxtrot, I agree with you. I've always been fascinated by the songs you mentioned, especially Dancing (you can really hear Hackett here) and Firth, exceptional and poignant melody.

Beautiful is beautiful goodbye, and for me it's always a 5 obviously. But Foxy is from another planet. Foxy is perfect.

I have always been unable to choose my favorite among this one, the previous one, and the next one. I have given up.
Genesis: Foxtrot

I finally found it in the labyrinths of the house and listened to it:
It deserves a full five just for "supper's ready" and "horizons".
Here you can hear: a spectacular Steve Hackett, a more than on-form Peter Gabriel, an energetic Phil Collins, a skillful Tony Banks, and a good Mike Rutherford. I believe that along with Selling England, it's the best of the "Gabriel, Hackett, Collins, Rutherford, and Banks" period.

Of Supper's, I preferred the moment when Hackett's first solo kicked in (after Gabriel's "bang bang bang!") and the end when he repeated the initial leitmotif, like the unmentionable, I'd give it a 9.
Genesis: A Trick Of The Tail
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Perhaps the best album by Genesis after they stepped out of Gabriel's "cage." Before this is brutally critiqued, let me say that the real Genesis—meaning the people (Banks, Rutherford, Collins, and Hackett) without Peter—found themselves freer and, above all, able to focus on the music and not just on the soloist. In fact, the period of: The Trick and Wind is the best in my opinion.

Mmmsi and no, yes and no. This is one of my favorite albums but this "they could focus on the music and not just the soloist" is a huge load of nonsense except for The Lamb which is, however, a different story. Everything else is not inaccurate and it's not completely crazy to have these two as favorites, definitely not this one.

The "real" Genesis were ALSO Gabriel, who was perfectly integrated into the group (at least until Foxtrot, the pinnacle of their work) and was the other strong personality alongside Banks, that’s all. One dominated with the lyrics and theatricality, the other in the shadows with the music (they were all under the name "Genesis," but he was the one with leadership as a composer), but there was never any CAGE at least until ’72-’73 (by the way, The Lamb is still their best along with Foxtrot for me). The thing is, Gabriel was the frontman and he brought the image; without him, they became less distinctive and theatrical and more "complete" in their songwriting and refined. I could discuss this stuff for days, perhaps it’s better if I stop.

Ah, they didn’t find themselves freer from Gabriel, it’s Gabriel who found himself freer from Genesis, and from Banks, sorry but that’s how it is, it’s Gabriel who escaped from the cage (that he had helped to create, obviously) and Totonno took control. In the long run, it created a disaster...

There’s no need for me to explain why that quoted statement is nonsense; "The Musical Box," "Stagnation," "Can-Utility and the Coastliners," etc. explain it all by themselves.

Sorry if I freaked out, but I know this little group quite well and I like it just a little bit...
Genesis: Duke
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Wonderful album, the penultimate inspired one, the last is We can't dance, but this is so much more. A lively album that expresses the anger over Phil's failed marriage and the desire to come together with a pop music album that is anything but trivial. I didn't find any weak tracks...
  • "I haven't found any weak spots"... look closely, it's not that hard to find some, three that come to mind at the moment: the two loffes by Rutherford and "Misunderstanding" by Pippo Collins.

Rutherford alone signs a single track, Man Of Our Times, a great piece that wouldn't be out of place in Smallcreep's Day. Misunderstanding is just a preview of Collins' solo work, weak for the old-school fans but successful for the new direction of the band. I find Duke a nice album overall, superior to the previous one.
  • There’s also "Alone Tonight" which I believe is by Rutherford. I don't share your opinion on "Man Of Our Times." I find the general album pleasant too, but it ends there at pleasant, nothing that can stir the insides.

Not having the old vinyl at hand, I rely on the credits of the CD, where Alone Tonight is credited to the trio, but there could be a printing error right on the disc. The album takes me back to the past; when it was released, I was gifted it for my 16th birthday, and for a long time I listened to it to the point of exhaustion.

Misunderstanding (anf) is not that weak, and Alone Tonight I liked quite a bit. Nothing exceptional but not too weak either. I found Man of our Times a bit out of place; I can't make it fit well with the rest of the album. But it's a good single. The videos worsen after Duke.

Wonderful work with the best version of "in the cage" in my opinion.

After this, there's Banks laughing like crazy on a croquet field with his Mega Villa.

Tastes are tastes, for heaven's sake. But if you say that this version is your favorite, it means you don’t understand anything about the lamb, and that is an objective fact. Leaving aside Collins' vocal performance which resembles an odyssey in a nursing home, it completely lacks the strength, tension, and unease of the original, which is also present in the versions found in previous live performances.

Of course, these were not Genesis, it was a musical titled: "Three Rich and Elderly English Gentlemen on a Trip from Their Luxurious Mansion with Garden to Rome." I know it's a crappy title. But no, this is way more exciting (or was it 4 z’s?) than Genesis with Gabriel, and this is CERTAINLY the most improved version of "In the Cage." Avoja oh. I would send this comment to the three little pigs; they wouldn't stop laughing, but Banks would be rubbing his hands together for having managed to trick someone.
