Angra: Hunters And Prey
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Listenable
Angra: Temple of Shadows
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
When one puts in commitment and good creative energy, essential requirements for the creation of a concept album, Angra knows how to work, and thus they manage to present, at last, an album with new, powerful, and fast sounds (power and speed, indeed), melodically effective and sharp riffs. The qualitative leap so long hoped for in Rebirth has finally taken place with this album, which deserves to remain in the top 10 of the best metal albums of all time, in my opinion.
Angra: Holy Land
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
An unintentionally concept album, yet musically and sonically, it showcases every facet of a well-made concept album: Angra delivers their best, with a power/speed metal that is surprisingly refined, infused with Brazilian dance rhythms and sounds that brilliantly blend with the aggressive and effective power sound. An album that deserves at least a listen even from those who don't appreciate the band. A must for anyone wanting to have a clear idea about the group.
Angra: Angels Cry
CD Audio I have it ★★★
A good start that, however, does not deserve more than a mediocre pass since I would personally discard certain songs right from the first listen (first and foremost, a rather shabby and pointless pseudo-classical intro that has little to do with the band and the rest of the album, followed by the cover of Kate Bush - good idea, quite tacky execution).
Angra: Fireworks
CD Audio I have it ★★
A highly debated album by the band. In my opinion, it’s a decline in style as they abandon the effectiveness of the Brazilian mix, opting instead for an approach (not very successful as it is musically predictable) to a power-progressive sound that recalls Dream Theater in their early days. In my opinion, it all sounds like a self-congratulatory showcase of the technical skills of the various members. An album I can gladly do without. What a shame.
Angra: Rebirth
CD Audio I have it ★★★
The change in formation is noticeable, just as the desire to return to the indigenous musical roots that were clearly defined in the band's first two albums. Nevertheless, everything still sounds a bit outdated and ineffective, failing to bring out the beloved Angra from "Holy Land." It's a listenable and enjoyable album for various offerings (such as the classic Nova Era, Rebirth, Visions Prelude), but a bit dull and repetitive overall. It bodes well to hear the quality leap.
Angra: Freedom Call
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
MiniCD that is truly worth having only for the first two songs (actually unreleased). The style of Holy Land is excellently repeated, and both Freedom Call and Queen Of The Night deserved to be part of a full-length album that better showcases them instead of this "collectors' gem" that few possess. What a shame.
Angra: Holy Live
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
A Mr. Live, whom you listen to and appreciate once or twice, only to end up in the drawer of nice CDs that you have no use for. After all, it's still a live recording, so one can only acknowledge that the performing skill of each member, audible on compact disc, is equally remarkable in live concerts; but the tracks are of no use to you, sounding exactly like the album. An item that is not indispensable except for fans and collectors.
Flawless live for all the members except Falaschi. It confirms that the new frontman manages to save himself with a corner kick during "PGR." A live performance that, in itself, makes little sense if not to amplify the nostalgia for Matos to the N-th degree. If only they had done it during the "Temple Of Shadows" tour, damn them...
Angra: Aurora Consurgens
CD Audio I have it
An album that has never attracted me, so much so that I could never listen to it with great interest. I refrain from giving it a rating, but if I had to, I would be torn between a 2 and a 3: melodies that, in my opinion, are rather ineffective and a somewhat repetitive style. They try to keep the spirit of Temple Of Shadows alive, but I believe they fail by redirecting the listener into a concept album idea that had already ended with "Gate XIII". An album I often want to revisit but find a bit disappointing.
Angra: Acoustic... and More
CD Audio I have it ★★★
A collector's gem. The acoustic versions are beautiful, although the recordings are a bit poor despite being produced in 1998 (and not in Burundi). In itself, it's an album that could have not existed in Angra's discography, but on the other hand, it's only found in the "Holy Box" set, so its sole and obvious commercial purpose was also expected.
Behemoth: The Apostasy
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A great album, Nergal unleashes a powerful and effective growl for the sound proposed by the band. A violent death metal but melodically well thought out, without any audio "mishaps." Finally, someone who understands that good metal is neither made by pure technicalities (see the early Children Of Bodom) nor by extremely crude qualities both musically and qualitatively (see Behemoth themselves in their early Black Metal productions). A great album.
Behemoth: Zos Kia Cultus (Here And Beyond)
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Violent and decisive, a blow to their old "blackster" image. Finally, a nasty, aggressive sound, with sharp teeth and ready to butcher. Hammering and cutting rhythms, a feline voice. A great record that, however, sometimes feels a bit saturated with ideas, leading to the occasional skipping of certain songs.
Behemoth: Demigod
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Zos Kia Kultus returns with an even more refined sound and a production that fully captures the destructive totality of the new Behemoth.
Bethesda Softworks: Fallout 3
CD Dati I have it ★★★★★
A flashbang of hope that makes us believe in the survival, even in the 2000s, of Video Games with a capital "V." A game that simply can't not be liked, featuring a unique and well-crafted soundtrack. Nevertheless, it risks becoming a bit dull after around thirty hours of gameplay (in short, you play it gladly, you finish it, you mess around for a few more hours, and then you file it away in the trash). It remains a significant milestone in the realm of great video games.
Birth Of Joy: Make Things Happen - Single
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Outdated yet at the same time aggressive and modern sound. A great band that deserves attention and credit.
Caribou: Swim
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Interesting album in the more "pop" tracks. Light experimentation in the rest of the overall work. A decent album that won't become one of my favorites. Nice to listen to at "convivial" occasions.
Coldplay: Prospekt's March EP
CD Audio I have it ★★
A fall from grace, in my opinion. A return to the origins that I really didn't want to expect after a beautiful and innovative Viva La Vida. Simple and shamefully pop. Only "Life in Technicolor II" is nice.
Coldplay: Letf Right Left Right
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Mediocre live EP that fully showcases the pop potential of the band. Nice idea to distribute it for free at the shows (even though here, our very own Elio E Le Storie Tese are winning with their "Brulè" CDs) but it's not really a "must."
Coldplay: Christmas Lights
CD Audio I have it ★★
The usual pop omelet, which even comes out individually, in a completely isolated context, created solely for the exclusive need to sell and to be able to show up under the tree even in 2011. All in all, a nice and catchy song, pure Coldplay style, the theme for a possible movie finale titled "Christmas at Chris Martin's House."
Coldplay: Mylo Xyloto
CD Audio I have it ★★★
After the sound turning point of Viva la Vida, Coldplay had two paths: to dive into good electronic experimentation under Eno's watchful eye, or to insert synths with dreadful and random sounds and propose nonsense in 4/4 from "ignorant disco." The CD isn't bad in itself, because I like certain songs ("Up In Flames" has spectacular sounds and the idea of doing a dub piece is more than excellent and fitting), but the pop shamefulness teeters on the edge of compositional idiocy.
Eno feels and feels again. A decisive turning point for a group that was increasingly saturating into a pop that was all the same and not very impactful. With Viva La Vida they made a considerable qualitative leap, which might lead to not appreciating everything that follows.
I like every song and they are innovative (for the POP field). While they may not offer groundbreaking novelties in the history of music, in their genre they were the first to want to completely change face and style...
Coldplay: X & Y
CD Audio I have it ★★★
An album that may grow on you as you listen to it. The Kraftwerkian rendition of Talk/Computer Love is nice, and the increased use of electronic instruments such as synthesizers is commendable. All in all, however, it’s a mediocre album in terms of creative offering. It deserves a 3.5.
Coldplay: A Rush Of Blood To The Head
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
A beautiful, decisive, effective pop rock. Good study of the tracks and nice melodies. A drop in quality with "Green Eyes" and "Amsterdam," which make you want to vomit.
Coldplay: Parachutes
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Real rating: 3.5.
A beautiful album, beautiful tracks. But too, TOO, TTTTTTOOOOOO melancholy. Great for romantic movie soundtracks or for people who are emotionally in an "active" situation (both positively and negatively). The songs themselves sound very similar to each other. For me, it has been overrated in terms of compositional quality. Melodically enjoyable and listenable.
Elio e le Storie Tese: Studentessi
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Great album, full of always well-structured sounds and wisely utilized melodic/compositional proposals. A pop-prog-rock that doesn’t bore, entertains, and pleases. They move away from the old "independent" style and become a little more commercial. Perhaps the "memory effect" interludes could have been avoided.
Fun: Some Nights
CD Audio I have it ★★
pop disco, rich in folk-percussive references, well-placed singles, and pleasant melodies. They fall a bit short in live performances, as none of the choruses heard on the CD are replicated without the aid of loops.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: F# A# oo
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Every song is a novel, to be listened to and relistened, to be lived and contemplated. To savor the sounds of this album, one must be impassive, ready for anything, ready to be struck in every area, to act as a dam against a wave of music that will inevitably be stronger than you. An album recommended for everyone, appreciable by anyone.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Yanqui U.X.O.
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Impeccable. An album that reaffirms any previously formed idea about this group. Listening to this record means surpassing the simple "experience" and getting directly closer to a "living" of each story as it is in every single song.
Iron Maiden: The Number Of The Beast
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Despite being considered by many the "ultimate" album in the history of Maiden - and Heavy Metal - I believe it doesn't deserve a 5 precisely because it might be too loved and praised to exhaustion. Of course, it contains remarkable tracks that have inevitably carved their place in Metal history, but we must admit that Invaders is a pure nod to the very early Maiden (after all, nothing new) and Gangland is an ugly blemish with a lot of black hair. In short, it's a beautiful album, but
Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Historically speaking, it's one of those albums without which the history of music would have risked not possessing an entire chapter concerning the NWOBHM. I rate it 4.5 for the music, but not a full 5, because it's their first album; we'll have to see what they can offer in the future.
Iron Maiden: Killers
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Iron Maiden reaffirm their heavy presence more than ever, with this album they can proudly carry the banner of NWOBHM. A heavy sound that is anything but predictable, which doesn’t lean too much on previous genres and at times can echo their own sound from many future albums. A good achievement. One of the best from the band, in my opinion.
Iron Maiden: Piece of mind
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The lineup change raises the Maiden by a notch. They finally offer a new, strong, and well-defined heavy sound. It doesn’t deserve 5 stars because there are still those "a little bit like this" songs in the tracklist that you’d gladly "skip" during a full listen of the album.
Iron Maiden: Powerslave
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
An album more than sufficient, deserving a 4 for various reasons:
- beautiful, effective songs, but not particularly innovative on their own
- "current" sound for those years, which firmly upholds the idea of Heavy metal
- Masterpieces (see the wonderful "Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner" or "Two Minutes To Midnight") combined with some trash (see "Flash Of The Blade")
Iron Maiden: Somewhere In Time
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Rediscovered after years of unjustified snobbery. A really great album, it stands strong but surely the new Maiden sound will be fully confirmed with the next album.
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
By the late '80s, Synth Pop reigns. The Maiden deliver the most striking Heavy Metal of those years, heavy, aggressive, but not necessarily retrograde and “mummified.” An album with an innovative and contemplative sound (just as they like it and I do too). Well-presented and structured songs that go a bit beyond the usual chord progressions and pentatonic solos. One of the most successful in the band's career.
Iron Maiden: Fear Of The Dark
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The right heavy metal of the early '90s. Aggressive, brilliant, wicked. I consider this album on par with Piece Of Mind, meaning good songs paired with skippable tracks.
Iron Maiden: Virtual XI
CD Audio I have it ★★★
An album full of good ideas, poorly executed by the lineup. Bailey sings well, but he's not suited to the Maiden sound. In the future, during live performances, they'll be able to reinterpret and revitalize them thanks to Dickinson (see "The Clansman" at Rock In Rio). Mediocre.
Iron Maiden: Dance of Death
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
An album rich in great ideas and a Heavy sound worthy of the name in the '00s. Some wonderful songs, like "Dance Of Death" or "Paschedale," are interspersed with rockin' tracks like "Wildest Dreams" or "Journeyman," which, although catchy, do not make the album fully Heavy and deserving of an excellent rating.
Iron Maiden: A Matter Of Life And Death
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A successful album. Iron Maiden reaffirm their ability to keep up with the times and present a non-nostalgic (these days, songs like "Prowler" would sound like simple hard rock) and aggressive Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal, pure, heavy, just as only they can deliver. Those who do not appreciate this album often fall into a nostalgic "better in the DiAnno days" or a dismissive "the usual riffs," which is based solely on tonal analysis, but not on the rhythmic and melodic understanding of the sin.
