Pink Floyd: The Division Bell
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
By now, the direction and meaning of the album is entirely entrusted to Gilmour, as a songwriter, singer, and especially guitarist. While there are no shortages of grand melodies and heartfelt solos, it is precisely the lack of cohesion (and a few flatter songs) that prevents it from being a masterpiece. The unforgettable final trio is a highlight.
Pink Floyd: More
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
Of course, a minor work, a relaxed meditation on the direction to take. The heavier tracks (The Nile Song and Ibiza Bar) are interesting, with a full sound that brings out the 4 when they do traditional rock! However, in my opinion, the best part remains the organ riff in "Cirrus Minor," monumental.

One of the best things about the '80s.
Procol Harum: Shine On Brightly
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Masterpiece! Brooker's performance is one of the most exciting ever, the musicians are eclectic and the art-rock atmospheres, ironic yet incredibly elegant, are delightful.
Puscifer: Conditions of My Parole
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Great album, intriguing sounds, excellent guests, and the usual magnificent interpretation by Keenan. But it definitely could have taken more risks.
Queen: The Miracle
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
One of the most representative albums by Queen: cheeky, extravagant, dynamic, cohesive, dramatic, genius. "The Miracle" and "I Want It All" are among their absolute best tracks.
R.E.M.: Collapse into Now
CD Audio Not intrested ★★★
Even though they still produce a few great tracks, the rest is dishearteningly bland. I agree with their decision to disband.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magic
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Despite the considerable commercial appeal, we have some incredible musicians here who have found an overwhelming formula: rhythmic, sparkling, ironic, grandiloquent, and at the same time tremendously refined (sometimes teetering on the edge of prog!). Beautiful album, although a bit too long.
Renaissance: Novella
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Fairy-tale like yet surprisingly contemporary, and musically suspended between folk, jazz, and symphonic prog: although generally underrated, this album is a little gem.

I only have their first self-titled album with the original lineup, and I have to say I really like it, but I haven't delved deeper into their work...

Starting from 1972, Renaissance becomes a completely different band, equally valid (I also like the early Renaissance, the ones with Relf) but very different. It offers something, it’s romantic prog, symphonic but devoted to melodic lines divided between classical echoes (with some clear cultured citations), folk, and high-class pop. And, now and then, something a bit more "rocking" like the title track of "Ashes Are Burning" and especially this cool piece here (perhaps THE Renaissance track for me) featuring the synthesizer of special guest Francis Monkman

And by "another band," I mean that the lineup changes completely; they have started from scratch.
Skunk Anansie: Post Orgasmic Chill

They are incredibly strong! Technically proficient, energetic, experimental, with excellent melodic instincts. Whirling tracks with many evolutions, thunderous riffs, skill, and emotion.
Spock's Beard: X
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
Simply a superb album, every now and then our guys, as usual, go a bit overboard but it remains one of the most dense and brilliant albums ever, one of the brightest examples of why progressive music, even though intricate and cerebral, can evoke immense emotions. The long suites, "Jaws of Heaven" and "From the Darkness," are probably the best things they have ever composed. Who speaks ill of good Nick!!!

Well, obviously it's not to be dismissed at all, indeed "Shadow of the Hierophant" is really beautiful, but the other tracks are not very intricate and not all the transitions are quite successful. What I appreciate are the Genesis atmospheres, of course; they do sound a bit familiar and are expressed better elsewhere, but he was part of that band, so he can afford it...! I'd say that the 5 stars really go to other works...
    P.S.: I didn't understand Miss Kinotto's joke!

Steven Wilson: Insurgentes
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
Often overlooked in the face of the grandiloquent subsequent works, this record is, however, already incredibly dense and polished in detail. Claustrophobic, experimental, effective: a great debut.
Steven Wilson: The Raven That Refused To Sing
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Probably one of the best albums ever, not just in prog. The blend is unique, between the chilling experimentalism of "Insurgentes," the eclectic jazz of "Grace for Drowning," and a songwriting that is as poetic and evocative as ever. The story of the raven is certainly the most stirring, but the others also depict characters with a lyricism and a stunning dramatic quality. Even the cover is a masterpiece.

Steven Wilson: Grace For Drowning
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
From the most moving and atmospheric pop-rock to the eclectic jazz with a crimsonian flavor, with all possible interludes. Great content, great musicians, flawless execution. A double album with an incredible level of quality and a wealth of ideas, all tied together by the same hallucinatory and melancholic inspiration. Just shy of a masterpiece.

It's a nice album, but I prefer the other ones by Wilson as a solo artist; I find it a bit uneven in songwriting and with a few too many lengthy parts (like Raider 2, for example).

0_0 beyond the fact that I don't understand what "The Wall" has to do with it, I don't know if it's meant to be a compliment, eh :D. In any case, the last one is probably my favorite of his solo work.
  • Tattone
    25 oct 15
Well, if you consider the theme of the album (the paradoxical isolation of young people despite social networks, etc.), it is comparable to the contents of The Wall. Musically, no, they are totally different, but in a way, Wilson has also made a compromise between pop (Hand Cannot Erase, Perfect Life) and progressive (Ancestral, Routine). So it has always seemed to me an appropriate definition.

Styx: Paradise Theater

Their cloying theatricality and that glossy taste in the arrangements could only find its highest fulfillment in a grand pop-rock masterpiece that deals with the decay of past glories.
System Of A Down: Toxicity

Explosive mix of trash, progressive, and exotic sounds, with aggressive and committed lyrics. Despite some moments that are a bit too frantic, this album is a masterpiece.

Tanita Tikaram: Ancient Heart

One of the most refined pop records ever, featuring top-class musicians and catchy tunes. Too bad that every now and then the songs come to a bit of a halt.
The Moody Blues: On The Threshold Of A Dream

Even though there are some less successful tracks (due to a psychedelic carefreeness that I consider to have aged horribly?), in this album the overrated English band reaches its compositional peaks in many episodes.

The Moody Blues: Days Of Future Passed

The Nice: Ars Long Vita Brevis
CD Audio Not intrested ★★★★
From this point onward, without the guitar, it really feels like an embryo of ELP, but aside from the good Emerson, the others are pretty decent musicians too! And they really have fun together... it's a shame that the flashes of inspiration are yet to come and that there are many moments of self-indulgence, if not outright arrogance.
The Pretty Things: S.F. Sorrow
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
In many ways, this album is a masterpiece: dynamic, intricate, engaging, experimental. It’s a shame about some tiresome excesses of English psychedelia and a few tracks that aren't quite up to par.
  • madcat

I have always seen it as the third classic of '60s English psychedelia, alongside The Piper and Sgt. Pepper's.
Tin Machine: Tin Machine
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
Impetuous, triumphant, sick: a rock album completely alien to Bowie's style yet somehow immeasurably his. It's a shame not all the tracks are that lively; in fact, many last a minute or two too long. However, the beautiful "Pretty Things" and "Video Crime" are definitely worth mentioning.
Tool: Ænima
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A work with unique sounds and rhythms, cryptic evocative lyrics, and a dizzying rise and fall of emotions. Even amidst its infinite facets, the composition of the 4 still holds some ties to a more traditional style from its beginnings. It is, however, one of the most sensational records of all time.
U2: Boy
Vinile I have it ★★★★
Perhaps the moment when Bono's earnest interpretation and The Edge's airy sounds (and so much reverb) combined the best.
Uriah Heep: Look At Yourself
Vinile I have it ★★★★
They have never been this close to being a classic hard-rock band. Great drive and a chilling Paul Newton, but they've done better.
The leap from the already enjoyable debut is spectacular and disorienting. With Jackson on woodwinds and Potter on bass, the incredible VDGG formula is almost complete: only the brave choice to do without guitars remains.
  • hjhhjij
    29 dec 15
They have completely given up on guitars to the point that in the next two albums, the electric parts will be played by Robert Fripp XD He has never been a primary element of their sound, but he has always been there, behind the sax and the organ and the keyboards (vocals aside of course).
  • Dragonstar

Among the best of the Generator. Refugees is chilling; in fact, I never listen to it before or after Still Life (the song): two tracks like that in a row could give me a heart attack.
  • Tattone
    31 dec 15
When I approached progressive music, one of the things that struck me most about this group was precisely this aspect: there were few or no guitars... considering also that in my opinion, the fewer guitars the album contained, the better the work was; in fact, I consider the two subsequent albums to be the best, while the debut and this one are the less impactful, at least until Still Life. That said, for me, "Refugees" is my favorite from this record, a lyrical tension and an interpretation simply irresistible that lasts throughout the not insignificant length of the track. However, VDGG certainly made their mark in history with other songs.
  • hjhhjij
    31 dec 15
"Refugees" is truly one of their immortal evergreens, Tattone, one of those songs for which they have gone down in history.
A work that is certainly immature and naïve but already possesses a certain elegance. In particular, Banton and Hammill are already in great shape (the latter only for his vocal interpretation). Beautiful "Octopus."
  • bluesboy94
    24 nov 15
The particular thing I love most about this album, understated yet not indicative of their subsequent path, is the echo of Hammill's voice in "Running Back."
  • hjhhjij
    24 nov 15
"Afterwards" is the immortal pearl of Hammill's earliest work ('67-'69) and "Octopus" is already heading towards The Least, only Jackson is missing. The rest is immature, tied to the '60s in a kind of proto-progressive psychedelia but really very enjoyable with some nice tracks and even a few quirks ("Aquarian"). The talent is clearly perceptible; perhaps one does not yet realize just how much there is... The Least will already be something new, unique, personal, unimitable, perfect, with a raw, dark, and wild sound that gradually, with the masterpieces of maturity, will no longer be found in their records.

  • hjhhjij
    25 nov 15
Yes, it's definitely immature; their sound is not yet well defined, the sax of Jackson is missing, and Hammill's writing in some cases is still naive, rough, although it already shows all the talent. The album is beautiful (well, if you're asking me...) and has references to psychedelia, but it can't be denied that it is immature and searching for a direction, which was found soon after.
