10cc: The Original Soundtrack
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The consecration album: draws from Zappa and Gentle Giant to provide an abundance of ideas and inspirations to Queen. The marvelous pop of I'm Not in Love will make its presence felt everywhere, while the suite Une Nuit à Paris, compared to Bohemian Rhapsody, is definitely another world. Listen, people... listen!
4 Hero: Creating Patterns
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Nu-Jazz? Drum'n'Bass? Broken Beat? Simply everything and the opposite of everything, where the vocals take center stage, pausing while the rest of the collective plays at being Magma in an improbable kobaian dancefloor (Twothesme sounds like an outtake from Udu-Wudu). Sounds from the new millennium, sophisticated chaos.
Air: Talkie Walkie
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
How to draw from the '80s without risking nostalgic blunders, adding just a hint of Nouvelle Vague in melancholic pocket dust, and the game is done. Over the years, it stands like an earthquake-resistant skyscraper fully compliant...with solidly delicate grace.
Almamegretta: 4/4
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the very few great Italian albums of the last two decades.
Aphrodite's Child: End of the World
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
You should come with me to the end of the world, without telling your parents and your friends...running away like 68ers, today secrets are useless, these three already understood back then that immobility can only lead to ruin, and to not even having the gas pipe to cling to anymore.
Asia Minor: Between Flesh and Divine
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
A journey of romantic and melancholic transport, in the full style of French Progressive but with an eastern touch inherited from the Turkish origins of the compositional duo. Like the Pulsar destined only for oblivion, in the one mistake made: being released at the worst possible moment.

A masterpiece on par with "Halloween," which has had a second youth as a cult album. Today, if you try to click "Pulsar Halloween," you might come across phrases like "one of the ten best symphonic albums in the world." I also really love "Crossing The Line." A unique band (also for the particular geo-cultural background that you have perfectly highlighted).

At 20, a copy of Halloween kept appearing among the 1000 lira records in a now-defunct shop. I ended up buying it, and for years I didn't know anyone who had listened to it. The previous album, The Strand Of The Future, is also very nice, and if you like the genre, another record to have is the eponymous one by Aphelandra, a lost album released by Mellow almost 20 years later.
Atomic Rooster: Death Walks Behind You
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Even John Cann has gone forever, and now the album title fits perfectly... but the masterpiece remains.
Babe Ruth: First Base
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
English band of second division with first-class technique and ideas: it was only an innate versatility that precluded their success. Classics like the solid Wells Fargo, the Morriconian The Mexican, the breathtaking crescendo of The Runaways, all bearing the vocal mark of Jenny Haan. And who else had the courage to cover Zappa in 1972?

The beginning of the definition is gold medal-worthy; they are unknown but taking a look online and based on what you tell me, they seem really interesting. The final Zappian quote is another point in their favor. In my opinion, it’s a classic group where you can find their discography in that nice vinyl shop around Viale Monza.

Exactly, having one foot in Hard-Progressive, the other in Funk-R'n'B, wrapped in a Latin frame of Hispanic craftsmanship, will have caught off guard not only the printed media but also many potential buyers. Being out of alignment is always very costly.

"Janita" Haan remains one of the greatest front-women of all time for me. Incredible voice. A hurricane.
Bill Bruford: Feels good to me
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Putting together a stellar Jazz Rock band while Punk was raging was a gamble for Bill, but Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin, and Dave Stewart were there to leave everyone in awe: the sexy chanteuse Annette Peacock and the veteran Kenny Wheeler provided two dazzling cameos. And still, Canterbury reigned in that sound. All you need to do is sit back and enjoy.

    5 nov 14
Of course. In '77-'78, everything was happening in music, and the wonderful and innovative records were countless, but for a record to be cool, it doesn’t necessarily have to be innovative; it just needs to be cool. The NH are proof of that, and Bruford, I imagine, as well.
Black Sabbath: The Eternal Idol
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
With the brief Gillan-Hughes interlude behind them, Iommi discovers an obscure singer, Tony Martin. With his epic lyricism, the sound becomes more majestic than ever before, opening a trilogy of excellent albums. The magic was far from fading.
Black Widow: Sacrifice
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Undoubtedly the pinnacle of the English Dark Sound: a malevolent blend of Proto Progressive containing the seeds of Death Metal and a thousand hints for future macabre rituals. An unstable line-up and simulated human sacrifices on stage will divide audiences and critics alike. The subsequent LPs will be a veiled memory of this unparalleled invitation to the Sabbath...SATAN'S THERE!
  • Hank Monk

Well...death metal seems a bit far-fetched to me, come on :D
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    24 may 17
Musically no (thank goodness!!!), but conceptually without them, the Coven, the Writing On The Wall, Necromancer, of course the early Black Sabbath and several other minor entities (the list is long but I'll spare you) paired with the classic Hammer/Amicus films, I doubt we would have reached such malevolence later on. The lack of empathy is in itself the essence of evil; the artists back then challenged the average listener and even those who wrote music, much more with the message than with the heaviness of the sound. It’s logical that the Anglo-Americans had the upper hand.
  • Hank Monk
    24 may 17
mmm...I don't know, but Death Metal really seems like a whole different thing. Sure, Black Metal maybe, maybe (but then let's also include COmus who are even cooler). Black Sabbath were pioneers in everything...I believe their first album is several months earlier than this Sacrifice.
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    24 may 17
Without a doubt, the Sabbath are the Bible for many; I am neither a fan of their music nor of the subsequent sector cinema. So I have no say in the matter, but my feelings are precise. I love "Sacrifice," Kip Trevor's voice, the late Clive Jones's saxophone (whom I met years ago, a special person in many ways), Jim Gannon's concept. "Sacrifice" was ready as early as 1968; it was meant to be a concept album by the Pesky Gee!, their second album. I prefer the debut of the Pesky Gee! to any Sabbath album, and it has nothing to do with them, with Metal, or even with Hard Rock. I am not interested in who came out first or later; what matters to me is what a record can convey.
Blondie: Parallel Lines
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The many facets of an album that could not possibly be a flop: Punk attitude, futuristic and decadent New Wave, remarkable Power-Pop, Sixties memories, and a dazzling entry into the dancefloor. No one had managed to mix the cards so well musically. The image did the rest.
  • Psychopathia

I have 5 of his albums, including this one. It's a lot of fun. It's pointless, once certain "light-hearted" music was done better.
  • imasoulman
    3 dec 15
You wrote a perfect mini-review in two lines. Perhaps, but perhaps, this is my favorite album from their first five. "Plastic Letters" is definitely more sharp and cutting, but the pop-wave synthesis that captures every facet of the spectrum (and the spirit of the times) is in "Parallel Lines." And then there's "Hanging on the Telephone."

Braianinna Braiananna, this record will put you to sleep, Robert Wyatt on the piano will make you snore loudly, so I’ll take the file with me, to doze off at the airport, Braianinna Braiananna, also replaces mom.
Bruce Palmer: The Cycle is Complete
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
He was accused of being a perfect idiot: listening to the album suggests that idiocy might be the best way to be in the world.
Cairo: Conflict and dreams
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The best of a trilogy of albums that redefine American Prog: all the usual references from across the Atlantic are present, but the listening experience flows with emotions, beautiful melodies, and remarkable technique. The premature death of the excellent vocalist Bret Douglas extinguishes the spark of an underrated band.
  • ranofornace

Really not bad for a prog revival 20 years later; it seems to me like a measured extraction of some constituent ingredients from the early period, primarily EL&P, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Yes, with a nicely disenchanted pop edge. After all, how could it be any different? Quite enjoyable to listen to.
Camel: Breathless
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
A classic album with no flaws: everything is in its right place, an exceptional attention to sound, even the easiest tracks shine on their own. How can one not love Latimer's long solo in Summer Lightning over the unstoppable drumming of Ward? Class that has never been sold enough.
Absolute romantic ecstasy: how many progressive acts of the '70s and how many celebrated masters of Moog and Hammond must have been inspired by this enchanting tour de force. Towards the end of the First Movement, a subtle organ line serves as a backdrop to a breathtaking string phrase. An immensely great artist who is never praised enough.

Change: The Glow of Love
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Mauro Malavasi, Davide Romani, and Paolo Gianolio, three boys already well-versed in the Bologna scene of taverns and singer-songwriters. In 1980, on the first try, the tavern transforms into a dance floor, the tagliatelle into neon spirals, and the world thanked by dancing, while the tortellini floated in a sparkling broth. GOOD TIMES.

Dalis Car: The Waking Hour
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Uncomfortable record in the dual task of putting an end to the journey of two of the most important British bands of the '80s. It does so in the moment of awakening, where dreams accumulate before fading away like dust in the wind. Blurred images of Greek-Cypriot caravans led by a gothic declaiming shaman remain. MINDBLOWING.

Gathering the legacy of Gaucho and The Nightfly and transporting it to Aberdeen is not just another Atlantic: that indiscreet charm of Pop perfectionism sometimes transcends time, revealing its scent with every listen, intoxicating the senses.
David Bowie: Stage
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The best live performance of the Thin White Duke, not only for the presence of Alomar, Belew, House, etc., but for the repertoire that in '78 revealed every facet of his career. The double CD also offers the original setlist of the show, highlighting the great sequence of songs. For me, a true rediscovery.

Go ahead, the remastering is a beautiful job and there are 3 extra tracks. Got it for 4.99. Used to vinyl split into various sections, here you have the show as it was. It opens with Warszawa and when it gives way to the riff of Heroes, it's truly an emotion. It's like hearing another album.
Demon: The Plague
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The connecting ring between the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the New Prog of the early '80s: a forgotten concept about the miseries of humankind at the mercy of a terrible virus, rendered with rhythmic power and airy, solemn solutions. A rare case of hybrid for open minds,
1980: the electronic kraut atmosphere of the previous decade gives way to nervous beats dripping with sweat from a spectral and provocative dancefloor. Here Mussolini, communism, Adolf Hitler, and Jesus Christ are lined up to get in.

Dr. Z: Three Parts to My Soul
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The rarest item in the Vertigo catalog, soon to be withdrawn from the market and becoming an object of cult. An obsessive and threatening sound like few others, capable of hypnotizing the senses. Only the essence of evil reigns unchallenged in these infamous grooves.

I attempted in the past to buy this fucking Vertigo catalog work, but suicidal madness, at the right moment, fortunately gave way to a glimmer of self-preserving clarity. The price was too high compared to the work, and not being a speculative merchant collector, I didn't feel like making the crazy move unlike so many other things that I consider much more musically and historically important (see Tomorrow, S:F:Sorrow, Think Pink, etc., all strictly in first original English press). In my opinion, Dr Z is simply a good prog album; I don't know the themes and I’m not interested in them, but musically it falls within a certain conventionality given by the instruments in use, especially the piano, with transitions and harmonic developments that are far from original, yet still enjoyable for that.

  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    12 oct 13
What I love about this album is the production, so raw that it makes it seem even older, the prominent role of the harpsichord, very sinister, and the voice, awkward like those that will come with the '77 Punk. Too many unusual points to make the concept theme not exactly irrelevant, but not the primary aspect either. The Akarma reissue I possess exactly reproduces the original double-gatefold artwork and also includes the two tracks from the first and only 45, stuff from an earlier era in a very different Psych-Pop vein compared to the album. As long as it exists, at a very accessible price.
Earth and Fire: Earth and Fire

The evolved Neder-Pop starts here: more noble than Shocking Blue, less kitschy than Ekseption, technically related to Focus but with a penchant for chart-topping singles. In this debut, at least three tracks made history, with Jerney Kaagman's wild perm ensuring the image. Soon, she would also refine her voice for the two subsequent Prog-Masterpieces, influencing other vocalists, Siouxsie in particular.
Eddie Jobson: Theme of Secrets
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The electric violin in plexiglass by Curved Air/Roxy Music/UK/Jethro Tull transformed in the mid-'80s into a Synclavier-Wizard: a surreal journey into its most secret emotions, its ability to create magic and melancholic transport in one of the Magnum Opus of electronics in that frivolous decade.

An autumnal record, in its brief melancholic digressions, accentuated by personal lyrics on the edge of multiple existential regrets. Evocative voice, simple melodic lines drawn by an ever-present mellotron. A Minor Classic from that 1970.

Yes, they had changed their name. White Faced Lady had been rejected by record labels back in the day, and was only released in the '90s, somewhat different in sound due to the real strings, but very interesting, a concept about Marilyn.
Fairport Convention: Liege & Lief
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Manifesto of British electrified Folk with Sandy Denny's voice wandering along country paths lined with dry stone walls, Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick strumming maestros in tow, and the rest of the band drawing farmhands and aquarists into a festive collective jig. Tradition and innovation transferred to a Rock stage.

When 10 short tracks make a great album: little fuss and a lot of brains, combined with an unmistakable voice. Among my all-time favorites, the single IN MY OWN TIME is one of the most beautiful rock songs of the '70s.

Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The perfect record to "acquire the taste" for Progressive. Always and in any case recommended... to everyone!
Gino Vannelli: Brother to Brother
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The album of great success but also of formal perfection: a sublime voice accompanied by great musicians, the crazy rhythm of Jimmy Haslip and Mark Craney in the Title Track rivals the excellent studio musicians of The Royal Scam and Aja without any fear. In '78 it was a great sensation, just like today, in fact.
GIORGIO: From Here to Eternity
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Culmination of Electronic Disco Made in Munich, ready for mass consumption with the simultaneous release of I Feel Love. Eternally plundered, from the New Wave of the '80s to Air and Daft Punk. Hats off to Mr. Moroder!
Giuni Russo: Energie
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Probably the best Italian pop record by a female artist: Battiato, Giusto Pio, and Radius at the service of a voice that truly knows how to go wherever it wants. Crisi Metropolitana, L'Addio, Una Vipera Saro' prove this at the first listen. Nothing similar has come out in Italy for over 30 years.
