Gracious!: This Is... Gracious!
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
There were times when already disbanded bands greeted showbiz by releasing masterpieces: Proto-Prog flags of the Vertigo school, they fell into that sonorous chessboard where King Crimson and Caravan used to reflect themselves from their ivory towers. The Supernova suite is still "gracefully" visible, lost in the most creative galaxies of Rock.

Greenslade: Greenslade
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The debut of a perfectly balanced group, despite the moniker. Long instrumental passages, guitar replaced by the solo bass, light and fast drumming, intriguing vocals, and dual keyboard work with all the tricks of the genre. After 40 years, one single adjective: ELEGANT.
Happy the Man: Happy the Man

The American Progressive? It arrives late, doesn't create scenes, doesn't sell records or dispense commentary. It's just the music that speaks, more emotional than ever, driven by an imaginative technique that dispels any pretentiousness. An album that illuminates every listen, every moment of sonic delight for refined tastes.

Curious, I search for them. Lately, I've been getting into prog bands from the outskirts.. I've just discovered Kaipa, Swedish (with songs sung in Swedish) from the early 70s. An extraordinary prog band, for me, and immediately entered my personal prog Olympus.
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    29 nov 15
Excellent Kaipa, featuring a very young Roine Stolt, long before his fame with The Flower Kings. The Scandinavian Prog scene was and remains incredibly rich, while the American scene has always struggled to find its place in the market. The two albums by Happy The Man were a kind of white fly in the rich catalog of a major US label, Arista, which didn’t know what to do with a band of such caliber.

Great musical personality and refinement. It’s also worth mentioning the Cartoon, even if with a more intricate proposal. And finally, I would gladly recall that a RIO scene does exist in the USA; it’s limited to a few musicians, but it is a force.

I don't know any of these people, not even from the American RIO, and of Nordic prog bands, I only know the Finnish Wigwam, who are pretty cool. Damn it.
Heatwave: Central Heating
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The mega Disco-Funk-Band of the author of Off The Wall, Rock With You, and Thriller, just to name a few: much of the sound of the King of Pop is born in these grooves, Rod Temperton and his interracial British collective, but not too much, at their best. The mystical charm of The Star of a Story stands tall like a beacon, and Quincy Jones and George Benson will give it even more shine. Spectacular disco.
High Tide: Sea Shanties / High Tide

The ghost ship of rock.
Hoelderlin: Hölderlin's Traum
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The tree of life in Continental Acid Folk, a vivid and stern Teutonic link between the Canterbury scene of Spirogyra and the baroque Neapolitan school of Saint Just. If I had been 18 in 1970, I would have wanted to record an album like this, only to disappear afterward.

Ian Anderson: Walk Into Light
Vinile I have it ★★★★
When electronics do not compromise quality and interpretation: Mr. Flauto and the little magician Peter John Vettese have briefly been a brilliant duo, the tracks flow rich with passion, warming the synthetic musical ideas, and there’s plenty to go around. To be listened to without any prejudice.
Iggy Pop: The Idiot
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Legendary sequence of tracks, one can almost sniff the decadent moods, the icy innovation, up to that compromise between Neu! and Fassbinder that permeates the tolls of Mass Production, perhaps the peak of the duo's romps in that Berlin interior.

So you mean to say that Iggy and David... actually, maybe I knew it, but I didn’t picture it like that, Iggy. Then again, de gustibus. Speaking of music, I believe Iggy Pop gave his best with the Stooges.

One Shot branded Neon with no response upon release. The fantastic voice of Bob Jackson, his keyboards in endless duets with the guitarist, a touch of Dark Sound in a melodic yet original mood. One of my desert island records.

CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
After 4 years, navigating record labels and compromises, their '90s begin in total creative freedom, with a sound that is contemporary, excellent songwriting, and a Peter Nicholls who has returned and is in great shape. The Milan date of the related tour was a Prog Happening in grand style.
  • Lao Tze

those I prefer from the English Prog of the '80s, even more than Marillion. I've never liked calling it "neo"-prog; it might just be me, but it almost seems to downgrade artists of this level to the rank of epigones. Poetic like few, far from just simple (skilled) craftsmen.
IQ: The Seventh House
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Someone might argue that all their post-Ever albums sound somewhat the same, but where do you find a similar transport, an emotionality that erases all that technique for the sake of technique typical of other names with much more flattering stories? The Other Side Of Wierd? The Title Track? Just chills...real chills.
It's Immaterial: Life's Hard and Then You Die
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Champions of human coordinates in music, a mid-'80s debut destined to transcend genres and sounds. The vile Thatcherism opens the doors to globalization, and they, well ahead of their time, sing of fears and hopes, blending tradition and electropop. A gem to be rediscovered.
Japan: Quiet Life
Vinile I have it ★★★★
We’re not quite at the top yet, but it’s definitely the breakthrough album: the somewhat lethargic Dolls-clones transform into refined and cold dandies ready to point the way to the '80s. In Vogue, The Other Side of Life, and the dynamic title track outline the future coordinates.
Jethro Tull: Benefit
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
No historical pieces but rather an improved sequence of tracks. A sense of measure that later Anderson will only maintain to keep himself balanced in his rockstar crossovers.
Joe Cocker: Joe Cocker
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Only in Italy did it come out with the American cover of "Joe Cocker" and the European title "Something To Say." Today, confusion is inevitable, but the album remains a classic Studio/Live in a swirl of grace. The prophetic blues of St. James Infirmary belongs solely to him, just as the songwriting of High Time We Went doesn't belong to Zucchero.

Never listened to it again, but I adore the first Cocker! Especially this one and "With a Little Help..". Classic!

Not even For Whose Fault? belongs to Zucchero (it didn’t even belong to Joe, since Hitchcock Railway wasn’t his, so the Fornaciaro plagiarized a cover...). Not even New Wonderful Friend (Hello Little Friend), not even Mint & Rosemary (Sandpaper Cadillac)... long list.
Kansas: Leftoverture
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
The first American prog album to enter the Billboard Top Ten, and rightly so: there isn't a single piece out of place, technique, inventiveness, and passion illuminating the individual performances, Steve Walsh's vocal range, an example for a myriad of colleagues, and the magical touch of Robbie Steinhardt's violin giving it its trademark sound. When I think of The Wall, only this album comes to mind.
Kate Bush: The Dreaming
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
A record ahead of its time, as current and bold as few others, magnificent in revealing itself listen after listen, and even now I can still catch hidden details from my 18 years, when vocal exploration came before everything else. A masterpiece of expressiveness.

I love her first album, an undisputed masterpiece of the most refined pop... But damn, when she "got dirty" and broadened her horizons and musical exploration, she reached levels of astonishing height and quality. "The Dreaming" is so beautiful it’s scary. I've been saying this for a few years now, and I haven't gotten tired of it at all. I love her.

This monument stands to Post-Punk as the first Black Sabbath stands to Heavy Metal. A perpetually lit beacon for the entire Industrial scene... and it’s much more Punk than a lot of crap that still tries to pass itself off as such today. A timeless work.

Magic Mushroom Band: Process of Illumination
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
25 years after its release, I thank this "aromatic" band and the entire English Neo-Psych scene for paving my artistic path and a lifestyle between a Rock stage and a dance floor. Without Grunge, Stoner, and any Metal, my '90s enlightenment completes its process.

25 years? I was a big fan of the English neo-psych scene; I had a ton of CDs from various Ozric, Mandragora, Poisoned Electric Head, Soma, Delirium Records, and so on. I was just a kid, and to look cool, I used to dig up the most incredible names. Great stuff, the thrill of searching for records, the wait for the mailman. My biggest regret is that I sold so much of that stuff.

Good job. So look for the rare, wonderful 12'' 'Head To Head' by Saqqara Dogs (I've been searching for twenty years, and to think I had it and some jerk stole it from me at a party, I think). It was stunning, it was beautiful. Even the first EP by Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction was no joke, though.

Riffs and solos Hard-Rock, impressive virtuosity on the Moog synthesizer, small collective tour de forces but also finely crafted Pop intuitions, and no cover versions. Mick Karn: Titles

His debut 30 years ago: Cypriot origins and Middle Eastern effluvia take precedence over pop, with the cameo of SENSITIVE signed by Mikis Teodorakis, if anything, reinforcing the intentions to tread on those territories. An unprecedented use of the bass, ahead of its time, and his winds of a mystical enchanter foreshadow New Age and World Music. It's a shame not to have it in one's collection.

Karn in '84 was engaged with Peter Murphy in Dali's Car, and curiously his last legacy is precisely a return of that exceptional duo, an EP released a few months after his death.
Mike Rutherford: Smallcreep's Day
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
A thank you to Phil Collins' marital storm for giving the good Rutherford time to record this gem and to team up with an Anthony Phillips in a keyboard role. With people like Simon Phillips, Morris Pert, and Noel McCalla, these are the final bursts of a characteristic sound swept away by Abacab. A suite and 5 tracks of excellent Prog, crafted to evoke emotion.

Neu!: Neu! 75
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Blending Rother's Soft-Ambient with Dinger's Proto-Punk is the turning point that sets this mega-epitaph apart from its predecessors, making it accessible to those who would truly smear Punk a couple of years later, but also to those who, pushing further, would sprinkle it with the icy electronics of the '80s.

A 12-string guitar and a Fairlight haven't traveled together so well since 1981. Some consider it the best synth album ever recorded; I just say it’s never too late to get to know them... and love them.

The return of the dark lady after 7 years of oblivion. Devotedly, the Banshees will want her to tour with them. The cover of Heroes must have filled the White Duke with pride. But for her, it was just a record to pay for her stuff.
Nirvana: The Story of Simon Simopath

1967: Soft Psych/Baroque/Pop concept, released before Tommy and S.F. Sorrow and quickly cast into the shadows. Light, yes, but what does it matter when melodies and arrangements are first class? I envy Mr. Campbell-Lyons in his role as A&R for the legendary Vertigo, and even more for having been well paid by Cobain and company.

For me, they are old and very old; in Hungary, they are celebrating 50 years of their career. The album is one of their best, hard progressive typically '70s with great keyboards and electric guitar solos. Maybe you’ll like them; this one is in English, but the real gems are the albums sung in Hungarian—one can't understand a thing, but they're truly unique.
A series of buried jewels soon to be overshadowed by the melodious apocalyptic release of Enola Gay. The night breathes in the misty garden of Statues and in the enormous mouths of the incinerators of Stanlow. In 1980's Liverpool, the Beatles shook hands with Kraftwerk.

The Title Track barely stirs the murky waters, making its way upstream on that barge from Apocalypse Now: the heavy air, desolate blood-red shores, drums and increasingly distant screams. Florian Fricke was able to anticipate that encounter with horror years in advance, solely through sound.

Visionary music (a "heavy" record, but I reiterate visionary and truly original for its time) and Fricke the greatest of the so-called krautrock movement.
