Every time I choose a De André album, by the end of the listening I always think it’s the best of all. An investigation into the lesser society, that of the losers and their hopes. The jones player, the only "positive" character, closes the album and conveys the meaning of so much poetry. One might then ask about the album....."you who sell it, what do you buy that is better?"

    The melodic/folkloric tradition of past centuries is revisited, unearthed, respected but also modernized, mainly through the rhythmic section and electric guitar of the then young Master Thompson. However, the most impressive aspect is the original compositions; one must read the credits to distinguish them from the true traditional ones: a musical-philological work of recovering traditional sounds and a certain sonic attitude that is truly astounding, especially applied to the new compositions, to the point that, fifty years after "Crazy Man Michael," it can indeed be considered a British traditional of the 20th century. Or that wonderful piece "Farwell, Farewell."
