Irony of fate... listening to it through headphones during the run, coming home and knowing that Dolores is dead. Bad story. R.I.P.

I quite like it... whether it’s turned or not, McDonald's and its impact really appeal to me!

For me, McDonald's entry ruined the band. For goodness' sake, he's a great songwriter and musician, but if I want to listen to the Doobies, I do it with their records from 1970-1975, a completely different vibe, a different sound. He puts me to sleep; I'd rather listen to others.

You are too wicked in my opinion, but as always, de gustibus.

It goes from southern-style folk/rock blues to an elegant but somewhat dull pop rock; of course, this is a good album, that’s all there is to it, dear Dan ;^))

    Forward, people!
  • Even I was taken aback by McDonald joining the group (one of my all-time favorites). Too soul, too pop, too adult his style.
But it was the (temporary, fortunately) loss of Johnston that downgraded the appeal of the Doobies. His invaluable rhythmic talent, his imperfect (very nasal) but cheerful and captivating voice were unique and irreplaceable elements in creating, together with the sporadic compositional contributions of the other guitarist Pat Simmons, the peculiarity of the Doobies, that mix of rock, country, blues, soul, gospel, jazz, funk, ragtime, bluegrass, and pop in a motorcycle and Californian sauce.
The four albums from '72 to '75 are "deep in my heart" for life. I adore them.
This Takin' It to the Streets, having overcome the shock of the stylistic change for those coming from the previous repertoire (as was the case for me back then), is a superb album. McDonald delivers his two best career songs ('Takin'... and 'It Keeps You Running') and it’s truly he who saves it in a certain way.
However, that hippy and motoric air that had permeated all five previous records vanishes, making way for a certain soft rock-jazz-funk mannerism, a bit à la Steely Dan but without the melodic harmonic genius of the latter.

Here, perfect review. However, I didn’t experience everything live; I became passionate later. And I hope they manage to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's about time, considering there are already a bunch of dogs and pigs in there...

    All right about everything!
  • The American R&R Hall of Fame is a very mafia-like affair, and the Steely Dan did well, for example, to tell them all to go screw themselves and not show up for the nomination.
...In addition to having countless other merits, the Doobies are a powerful live band: they play like hell, and the groove, especially in Johnston's songs, is lethal.
They experienced the same stupid misfortune as Procol Harum with "A Whiter Shade of Pale": the perfectly admirable "Long Train Running" is just the tip of an iceberg, filled with great music.
