You know that I love it, but I don't agree; this is absolutely not a masterpiece for me.

Because it’s a terribly patchy and disjointed album; clearly, Gabriel was uncertain about which musical direction to take. The same collaboration with Fripp will yield much more mature results already in "II" (that one is indeed close to being a masterpiece and also underrated). Moreover, here the production is sometimes excessive and suffocating. You can really feel that Gabriel doesn’t know which way to turn, and he tries a bit of everything—some things are forgettable, while others are excellent. It’s evident that we’re talking about Gabriel and that there are some stunning songs on the album. Overall, the album is good, but in my opinion, calling it a masterpiece would undermine the incredible works that followed. It definitely feels like a debut where Gabriel takes his time to kickstart a solo career whose results, well, we’ve seen—no, we’ve heard them :-)

I agree on many things, but I insist on the masterpiece, not because of the author, but because in my opinion, this album, precisely for its dissonance, represents the clearest expression of so much British music that came later, in addition to still containing so much of "the Lamb." I don’t want to blaspheme or place too much responsibility on my beloved, but I consider it the school ship of the times to come and certainly not at his home.

Well, I feel very little of the subsequent British music in this. I hear it as if it has qualities but ultimately it doesn't go anywhere. There are looks to the past, but sorry, I feel a revival of the sounds and attitude of The Lamb much more in "II," which perhaps was a little too composed under Fripp's protective wing. From "III" for me is the apotheosis, something that was solely and exclusively Peter Gabriel. Anyway, I actually like this debut, there are really beautiful songs. But I keep saying it's not a masterpiece for me, and I prefer all the subsequent ones up to and including "Us."

Planetary heritage, if it weren't for all the rhythmic patterns present. One of the most beautiful and influential records in the history of rock since the 70s.
