The Zombies: Odessey and Oracle
Vinile I have it ★★★★
A very good baroque pop album from the late '60s. But please, let's not bring psychedelia into it. I don't hear much that's psychedelic in here.

What an amazing collection! Essentially, these recordings from between 1978 and 1980 paved the way for certain noise rock to come, and especially for Sonic Youth. In a way, this album INVENTS Sonic Youth before their birth. The guitarist was one Glenn Branca...

Then, as a guitarist, he remains one of my "inspirations"...
Another one of those rare occasions when a band in its career has almost gotten everything right. Year 2001, these wacky geniuses of the more 'crooked' and experimental noise rock release what will be their swan song. And so we have skewed and limping rhythms, dissonances, split voices, TSO-like chants, out-of-tune guitars, and bursts of genius coming down like rain... Another band that deserved so much more visibility.

Definition of an anthology work!!! With absolute genius in the "cantilene da TSO". Unknown band.

As soon as you can, get them. Start with what I believe is perhaps their masterpiece, as well as one of the most beautiful records of the '90s and of the whole noise scene... namely "Lovelyville" from 1991. Amazing album! Or "Strangers From The Universe" from '94, perhaps their most 'palatable' work, which even features 'My Pal The Tortoise', an irresistibly POP song... But I reiterate, they haven't missed a beat.

By now, our conversations are turning into a continuous exchange of musical recommendations; and it's lovely for me to still discover so much great Music that I don't know yet. As always, I would like to express my gratitude to you.

I know "Mother Of All Saints." Great band, but as far as I'm concerned, it's best taken in small doses; their offering is so rich in ingredients that it becomes hard to digest.

I have their 1992 album, which includes "Hive," a song I've probably listened to thousands of times!

Buzzin'....they drive me crazy. "Mother of all Saints" is stunning, of course! Indigesti? I find them incredibly cool and sometimes even fun. Anyway, if you haven't listened to it, try to check out "Strangers From The Universe"...their most "pop" album...it contains what might be the only pop song they've ever written

to their production, like a Greek for Metaxa, ... Five Stars!!! (spastic hybrid of - one for each decade: beefheart+red krayola+fall+guided by voices+brainiac ending up in the asylum)
An album that should be counted among the greatest masterpieces of noise rock. Maybe in a better world... Anyway, 5 stars are even too few for this record. One song above all: "More Glee."

Well, I'm not crazy about the first ones, just like the last two, but this one, "Blue Afternoon" and especially "Starsailor" are mind-blowing masterpieces. My absolute favorite is "Starsailor," no doubt about it.
  • hjhhjij
    22 nov 13
On the latter, it's mandatory to agree; they're not much, for various reasons. "Goodbye and Hello" and "Happy Sad," however, are for me among the peaks of '60s singer-songwriter music, especially the latter. Gypsy Woman, jesus.

In a hypothetical ranking of preferences, this 2004 work ranks in my top 5 (alongside "Bone Machine" and "Swordfishtrombones") when it comes to Uncle Tom's discography. Ugly, raw, with skewed hip-hop inspired rhythms, and the usual sandpaper voice rambling nightmares and who knows what else is going through his mind.

And, to innovate a little more, no piano. He called it "cubist funk"; indeed, it's all about rhythm, even the voice. A masterpiece. But damn, this cover has taken off too.

The latest work where he tries to innovate, however, doesn't make it into my top 5 of his discography ("Frank's Wild Years," his ultimate masterpiece for me, "Swordfishtrombones," "Rain Dogs," "Bone Machine," and "Alice," which beats "Blue Valentines" by a hair).

  • hjhhjij
    23 oct 15
Unfortunately, the problem is that it can't be added here; it's like it got deleted but it was there, so it doesn't let you add it. It would be an issue to resolve, although I wouldn't say it's particularly urgent.

CD Audio I have it ★★
The umpteenth of the umpteenth so-called next big things pumped up by good old NME in 2012, but by 2013 no one knew anything about them anymore. It's the usual "cool" little pop act from Albion disguised as watered-down shoegaze. I still remember some idiot on OndaPROT insinuating that this stuff is superior to LOVELESS. Oh well... I got the album as a gift, then I used it as a frisbee...

I prefer "Crocodiles" from "Endless Flower" in the long run, shoegaze that is hyped by the press but much more substantial. This, upon a second listen, you forget.
  • SilasLang
    14 oct 13
even at the first. really trendy and commercial, people who care more about their look and hairstyle to pose on the cover of nme than about the music itself. I don't know the Crocodiles :-)

Tricky: Nearly God
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Even darker and more claustrophobic, Tricky, in this second work under the pseudonym Nearly God, year 1996. Much lower fidelity compared to "Maxinquaye," with elongated, paranoid, drugged atmospheres. The second masterpiece of the (once) genius from Bristol. The cover of "Tattoo" by Siouxsie & The Banshees that opens the album has haunted me for years... morbid like few others.
