The Beatles: Rubber soul

The true turning point album for the Beatles: the first to be conceived as a work of art rather than a collection of songs (hits and not), the first for which the recording studio becomes essential for the sounds, the first in which their beat is corrupted by the early psychedelic atmospheres and sounds (later explored in the subsequent "Revolver") already hinted at by the cover (the writing and the "deformed" faces from an "odd" angle).

I've always been a huge fan of this pop gem, much more than the White Album and Let It Be, for example. "In My Life" and "Michelle" are more than enough.

No, Michelle no, rather Drive My Car!
The Beatles: the Beatles
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
By far the greatest Beatles album, both in terms of quality and (of course) quantity of content. It ranges from psychedelia to pop, rock, proto-punk-noise, to experimentation with sound/structural collage and so on. In short, bring me another Beatles album rich (at least) as this one and I will run to get it.

They might have gotten on our nerves... they might be overrated... they might be annoying... but this album was, is, and will remain a masterpiece.

    I don’t know.

I've always found it a really great album, yes, but for me the best are Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abbey Road, and the Sergeant (the only four I give top marks to).

Syd, 4 discs with 5 balls are a lot, huh, not exactly "unique" :) And anyway, for the Bitolz it's too much, just "Revolver" :P

Well, consider the fact that a lot of people give 5 stars to all the albums from the '65-'70 period, huh. :) I like the BitolZ, although not crazily.
The Breeders: Last Splash

The year after, Frank Black had to come up with a (brilliant) double album to measure up to this incredible record. A definitive demonstration (if it was needed) that in the Pixies, there were 2 talents, and they were equally matched.

Wonderful disco and excellent mad recovery; I would also add a certain Mr. Santiago as a little genius among the Boston sprites.

I was listening to it the other day. Beautiful beautiful BUT it doesn't have the levels of the first 3 Pixies (up to Doolittle, in short). Those three little records have a truly magical balance (perhaps also thanks to the producers who brought out the "hard" side of the pixies, which would gradually fade away).

God how I loved the Breeders...and especially this album.

@ de marga as for projects outside of Pixies, I know Solobreeders and Frank Black solo, that's why I mentioned the 2 talents. Honestly, I don't know what Santiago @ Hank Monk has done, I would have some doubts that at least this, Pod and Teenager of the Year are not at the same level as the Pixies. As for the hard side of the Pixies, well, re-listen to Trompe le Monde :D @ silaslang this is probably my favorite of the Breeders too, but I also love Pod, that one is an amazing album as well.

Regarding Santiago, all I need to mention is his rattling guitar impact in the Pixies: a BIG BAND that will never tire us, right mad?

When I say hard, I’m talking more about sound than attitude. Basically, the songs from Bossanova aren’t that much worse than those from Surfer Rosa IMO; it’s just that everything is much softer. In Surfer Rosa, Albini made them sound more “hard” (it’s well-known how he encouraged them not to play like “pussies”), while in Doolittle, I think the producer himself (whose name I can’t recall right now) thickened the sound with a “bunch” of guitars. Well, this is to say that I still like the Pixies, but the epitome for me is that balance between neurosis, outbursts, and carefree pop that’s only so magical in those albums.

Yes, ok, but I mentioned trompe le monde, bossanova might be less hard in sound, but trompe le monde not in my opinion.

The Byrds: Fifth Dimension

At times, it really feels like you can hear them flying over the blanket's carpet.
The Byrds: Younger Than Yesterday
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
There is everything that the Byrds are: folk rock, psychedelic, country rock, raga rock... in just over half an hour.
Perhaps Albarn's best solo project to date, featuring Simonon from The Clash, Tong from The Verve, and afrobeat drummer Tony Allen: it results in a great album, which I shamefully underestimated upon release.

Aside from a couple of tracks I heard here and there at the time, I’ve never listened to the whole album. Some people have spoken well of it, while others haven't... maybe I’ll check it out sooner or later.

Hi Silas, if you want to give a listen to the solo album, I think this is the right place to start.
The Pretty Things: S.F. Sorrow

One of the three classics of English psychedelia and the first rock opera in history (Townshend and Waters must have listened to it for a long time, I think), the CD edition is also excellent, adding the accompanying singles that had been released at the end.

Waters? From what they say in the "ruokk" scene, he was taking so many drugs that he couldn't remember a damn thing...imagine if he even heard this album.

Sometimes I prefer it to the highly praised white light white heat, which I have always had trouble digesting all at once. Five, like the first two.

The absence of John Cale (the experimental side) is nonetheless felt; here emerges Reed's personality, which will undoubtedly mark all upcoming works until it reaches complete self-identification.
The Who: Live At Leeds
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
There's no Who's Next, Tommy, or Quadrophenia that compares: this is by far the best album by the Who (complete double version) as well as one of the greatest live albums in the history of rock.

I don't think so, that would be crazy, to say the least. One of the very few cases I know of (along with all the deluxe editions of Blur's albums with all the b.sides) of essential deluxe editions!

Unfortunately, I went to a record store, and the deluxe version was out of stock; I only ordered the 25th anniversary version. Sigh! :-( :-(
I believe it will arrive tomorrow, deluxe or not, the important thing is to listen to the beautiful Heaven And Hell, Summertime Blues, A Quick One, and the 15 minutes of My Generation.

Here it is. You see? They make something well with a perfect quality-price ratio and they eliminate it. They probably got rid of it when the 50th anniversary edition came out, which costs who knows how much and has other stuff (besides the two discs of the deluxe edition) that I've never really understood what it was. Anyway, even the single version is really something, you know.
