Well, it's difficult to make a comparison between the earlier films of Verdone (especially the first two) and those that came about ten years later (Compagni di scuola, Maledetto il giorno che t'ho incontrato, Al lupo al lupo, Io e mia sorella). I also much prefer the latter period, but for me, comparisons can't be made.

You know, I posted this comment without realizing it while I was making the list of my favorite films. But it’s true, for me the best works of Verdone are the first three, Compagni di scuola and Maledetto il giorno che t'ho incontrato, which I consider one of the best comedies in Italian cinema. (along with Pane e tulipani, I soliti ignoti, C'eravamo tanto amati, L'armata Brancaleone, Divorzio all'italiana, Signore e Signori, Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto, I Mostri, and some of Totò)

Italian cinema is a great cinema; since the post-war period, we have not been second to anyone in Europe. Right now, we’re showing some weakness, but we still produce something good from time to time.
