Really beautiful, it shows a lovely spatiality within the sub-genres of progressive.

Beautiful yes, the first 4 are absolutely mind-blowing. I just still don’t understand what the Pink Floyd have to do with those two albums. Aside from that, a very nice ranking. And if they’re in precise order, you copied the first three from me :D

So for me the first 3 are absolute perfection :)

In my opinion, Wish You Were Here and Animals are the only progressive albums since both Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are halfway between psychedelia and prog.

Here we enter a conversation that never seems to end, and I'm not in the mood for it now :) For me, the Floyd were never "prog," but in general, even prog, like other genres, is a categorization that risks becoming irrelevant. Even Magma, for example, are classified among prog, avant-garde, free-jazz, etc., yet you chose to include them, while I don't see Soft Machine or Area, other people that I find hard to classify in any way (like the Crimson themselves, after all). In short, this is an excellent ranking for the names it proposes, not so much for the genre represented.
Oh, great profile picture; "Bookends" is my favorite album by the duo.

For me, Soft Machine is really jazz fusion as they borrow almost everything from Miles Davis; if you listen to Bitches Brew, you'll notice remarkable similarities with Third.

I often listen to both Miles and the Softs. What do you mean by notable similarities? But most importantly, where do you hear them?

      19 sep 13
Sorry, both albums were released in '70, just one month apart from each other. How could they have copied Miles? Maybe they stole the sheets from him.

Be no real Jazz fusion (up to 1970) no. The first two are trippy, psychedelic-dadaist works that, especially in the second, laid down quite a few foundations for what is known as "Canterbury" (another fabulous catch-all category where they managed to squeeze everything from Caravan to Gong :D). Third is certainly pure Jazz-Rock inspired by Bitches Brew for 3/4 + Moon in June by Wyatt, which is something entirely different. In short, categorizing them as Soft Machine annoys me. From the fourth album onwards, it’s a different story because they definitively shifted to Jazz/fusion, albeit with mixed results.

Creating the perfect ranking is impossible, but in this list, I've included only albums that I consider masterpieces. For me, the first two albums of Soft Machine are 4, and the only masterpiece by Soft Machine is Third, which I consider a 5.

If I were to rank Jazz-Fusion, I would put Soft Machine and Area right in the top 10.

      17 sep 13
But I wasn't questioning either the ranking (which is nice) or your choices (I never do that with rankings) or tastes :) It's just that I fell into the annoying discussion about genre classifications, etc.

The Area are Jazz/Fusion and a thousand other things; they definitely fit in a J.fusion ranking. In any case, the first two albums by Soft Machine are absolute masterpieces for me, but there's always a matter of taste. Many of the albums you mentioned in the ranking (almost all of them) are masterpieces for me as well.

Just out of curiosity: have you ever heard anything from Wyatt solo or with Matching Mole?

I haven't heard anything by Wyatt solo yet, absolutely nothing, but I'll remedy that as soon as possible.

For me, the psychedelic masterpiece is The Parable of Arable Land by Red Krayola.

Here, I really have to give you three titles. Rock Bottom (1974) is perhaps my absolute favorite album, one of the most intimate and profoundly felt works ever. The fall and rebirth of a man just confined to a wheelchair. Then there's the first, the incredibly tough The End of an Ear (1970) and Ruth is Stranger Than Richard (1975). There are other very beautiful ones, but I would say these three are the essentials. Enjoy listening :)

I only heard "Spiral Staircase", I have another record that I should look for the title, honestly I haven't heard it yet. I've had the records at home for a long time, inherited from my brothers, but I just discovered them recently, the name didn't appeal to me, I was expecting a different band...

Great ranking, VDGG, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Soft Machine but above all the GENESIS are among my absolute favorites. A few albums by Peter Hammill like Silent Corner would fit in nicely, although, except for a few exceptions, they wouldn't exactly be "progressive."

For me too, Jargon. I have always been among those who consider the Pink Floyd of the seventies as progressive, at least until "Animals" (which, however, also features almost imperceptible references to New Wave and Punk).
