I would have included the TADs. Their "8-Way Santa" really rocked.

ps. And I would have avoided STPs like the plague, ahahahahah. But well, personal tastes are sacred..

Come on, the first two from STP are remarkable... I was a bit undecided whether to include them in the Grunge ranking, because they seem more post-grunge to me :) As for Tad, 8-way Santa was indeed interesting, but what I listened to never really motivated me to dig deeper into their music (plus, I’m not a fan of Tad's voice, but again... it's all a matter of taste :D)

I really like the first two (especially Alice in Chains); I recently listened to Screaming and they're a great band. As for the rest, Nirvana and Pearl never really impressed me, and I don’t know the others well enough to make a judgment.

@madcat: I don't consider Mad Season a grunge band, not in the strict sense.. still, a great project anyway :)
@hjhhjij: Nirvana, for better or for worse, were the symbol of grunge.. Pearl Jam is a different story.. their first three (in my opinion excellent) albums are strongly in line with everything that the movement was, while No Code is totally different, beautiful but bewildering.. since then they have settled into a typical American classic rock path, heavily influenced by Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen, producing work of varying quality.. but live, they are definitely a must-see.

I agree, it’s just that I find Nirvana (who I don’t dislike) extremely overrated, just an ordinary band. Jam simply doesn’t say much to me, but their early albums are undeniably good.

Okay, I consider grunge mostly an attitude, and for me Mad Season fits right in there with the two unplugged albums by Nirvana and Alice In Chains, which I believe are grunge albums, in terms of attitude, without a doubt, as well as being the two unplugged records par excellence. Regarding No Code, I agree, but I would also include Vitalogy as a departure from the two previous ones.
