Because, in fact, none of the mentioned groups play progressive music, not even in a broad sense. There is room, if anything, for prog metal. Very far from prog and very close to metal.

I don’t know, see it how you want, but in general, I find labels amusing; even prog metal means everything and nothing. Without going into a debate about what is and what isn’t prog, all these bands have various aspects that can be traced back to that type of sound, and they have all managed to transpose the concept of progressive into a modern language. In this sense, among all, Pain and Fates Warning definitely stand out; if you want to call them metal, go ahead, but for me, the truth is that the bands doing pure prog today are just rehashing past styles. Moreover, progressive by definition is a genre that sits in between various genres, so attempting to tilt it towards metal or rock or hard rock makes little sense to me. Just my opinion.

Oh my god, I'm not entirely in agreement; like, the Porcupine Tree at least didn't heavily reference the Floyd at the beginning, did they? And even The Mars Volta, to be honest, I see them classified almost everywhere as prog.

For me, a "Learning To Live" by Dream Theater has the same structure as a "Musical Box" by Genesis; only the "sounds" change. Bands like Pain of Salvation, Tool, The Mars Volta, or the Porcupine have managed to combine part of the Prog form (Concept, Suite, or other) with attitudes or genres developed in the '90s (from Crossover to Alternative Rock/Metal to Post-Hardcore for the MV). I think that if we talk about this term today and various young people are approaching the genre, the credit goes to them. Personally, I prefer to repeatedly listen to a "Fear of a Blank Planet" or a "De-Loused In The Comatorium" rather than a NeoProg album or by new players of RIO (who rightly represent the most pure aspect of the genre).

I also find labels quite useless anyway; every artist has their own context.

But does DeBasio bring back this ranking to point out and remember the nonsense that was written there?
