...carefully absent of niro...indeed the performances in taxi driver, raging bull, once upon a time in America, the deer hunter, mean streets, the untouchables, 1900 what do you want them to be...

..well maybe I included some films from the seventies (taxi driver, cacciatore, mean streets)

Yes, you included some movies from the '70s. Read more carefully before jumping in with your hypercriticism.

Yes, however, the absence of De Niro is quite significant (Raging Bull, King of Comedy, Once Upon a Time in America, Brazil, Mission, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, Sleepers). For the rest, it's nice, of course, it depends on personal taste.

I don't know, personally I perceive De Niro as more tied to '70s cinema, perhaps mistakenly. It's also true that his decent performances in the '80s are unfortunately offset by the many colorless, pointless, and sometimes even annoying films he participated in afterward. It's no coincidence that the ranking is "from 1980 to today." And then there's "Goodfellas" (which I hate), "Casino" (which I appreciate a lot)... and enough with this mafia! I've never been able to stand "Brazil." Anyway, thanks for your comment. Until next time ;)

Let’s be clear, many agree on this: De Niro is literally fantastic in "Raging Bull," "King of Comedy," "Cape Fear," "Once Upon a Time in America," "The Mission," "We’re No Angels," "Awakenings," "Sleepers"... No doubt about it, he’s an immense actor.

Yes, but "Goodfellas" cannot be hated, nor can Brazil, it's really against the law :D No, I'm just joking. But on one thing I am serious: what does "enough with this mafia" mean? Bob has played a gangster mafioso very few times if we look at all his films (until 1997, then he became a caricature).

For example, I don't like him at all in things like Non siamo angeli, one of his few flops from those years. For everything else, I obviously agree.

Roberto Benigni: Daunbailò. Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes :) In Night Taxi he’s full of energy and very funny, but he doesn’t drive me crazy. I found the episodes in L.A. (strepitoZa-hilarious Ryder) and especially New York much more hilarious, making me double over with laughter every single time.

yes, yes Elton hjhhjij, let’s also put Vivien Leigh in the '80s. Stop writing bullshit to self-celebrate your idiocy and you’re happy....

Oh come on, but this way Ettì it’s no fun. If you’re spouting nonsense with the clear intention to do so, come on. It’s your job to break balls (besides calling home) but try to do it with a bit of originality. What the hell does Vivien Leigh have to do with it :D I didn’t know De Niro was an actor from the '30s-'40s, I thought he had made films in the '80s (too), instead.

Of course, I've only mentioned De Niro films from the '80s and '90s in my previous comment. But you're right. Vivien Leigh fits in; she made a lot of films in the '80s, like Wind with Via part XXXth. And then there's the legendary Driu Berrimor, star of the film with Alcest as the protagonist.

Come on, stop honking all the time. After all, you’re funnier when you at least read the title. Johannes? I think you’re contagious, considering some of the movies you’ve shared.

Alcest, just stop it. 1) my friend hjhhjiji is off-limits (only I can touch him <3)... 2) someone with your nickname should be picking flowers on some little hill in the champagne française instead of being a pain in the ass in this dump.

"Alcest." read carefully, please. It’s about Alcestis. Is it possible that no one knows Euripides? Where is that cultured (in fault) j&r? Is he listening to Spristin?

I know Euripides. He recited verses to me while I was building the spaceship using the 10,000 tools that you would later play. I killed him with headbutts.

Yes, the overcultured version (so to speak, eh). In reality, it's the rough draft of Silvaplana, while Pinco is locked away in his review (perhaps due to a curse from Marc Bolan).

Here we talk about excellent performances, not necessarily great films. Many movies mentioned in this ranking certainly can't be defined as masterpieces, but the performances of the cited actors are outstanding. To clarify my point of view, still talking about De Niro (whom I might as well include in the list ;)), it's logical that, for example, between "Casino" and "We're No Angels," the more valid film is clearly the former, but for the actor's performance, I prefer the latter. What does the character of Asso add to others already portrayed by De Niro? It’s true that he hasn’t played the mafioso that much, but the mafia pops up a thousand times, embodied by other characters, in many of his films, and honestly, that bores me a bit. Well, considering he’s been working with Scorsese for a lifetime... great director, of course, but he should work at the D.I.A.;). A big hello hjhhjij. I enjoy discussing with you; you are among the few mentally stable ones on the site :)

One often forgets De Niro's "Mission," one of his best performances, a film from 1986. In a good ranking, I would include Dustin Hoffman's "Midnight Cowboy," stellar in that film.
    • hjhhjij
      11 nov 12
Midnight Cowboy, however, is from 1969; here we are talking about the '80s. In my opinion, Mission is saved precisely by the strong performances of Irons and De Niro. Anyway, I think Willem Dafoe and Jeremy Irons would fit in well here.
    • mild
      11 nov 12
I didn't even check what year it was made; I was convinced it was from the eighties. Anyway, it's the best performance by Dustin, in my opinion. Christian Bale in "L'uomo senza sonno" is also worth mentioning when it comes to great performances.
    • hjhhjij
      11 nov 12
Well, Midnight Cowboy is one of the jewels of New Hollywood, alongside films like Panic in Needle Park and Mean Streets (the latter being extraordinary). Dustin Hoffman in that film is outstanding.
    • mild
      11 nov 12
      I fully agree.
  • hjhhjij
    10 nov 12
Surely Scorsese knows that environment well or poorly (just look at the practically autobiographical Mean Streets), so these are themes that recur in many of his films (he also did Taxi Driver, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and even The Age of Innocence). Regarding the performances, I understand what you mean, and I think the "de gustibus" issue applies here as well. For example, I clearly prefer De Niro in Casino, even though the character doesn’t add anything new to his career (after all, he’s a character that really existed, like James Burke/Conway or La Motta).

  • hjhhjij
    10 nov 12
Then surely De Niro is a symbol of the maladjusted, lonely, psychopathic characters or those on the edge of legality (Johnny Boy in Mean Streets), it's his trademark, but for me, it works perfectly. For example, Al Pacino, another giant, has been much less versatile in his career (he's indeed played cop-gangster-gangster-cop many times), although he is an immense interpreter. Then why can't you stand Goodfellas? I mean, with all the gangster movies, more or less the same as each other (especially those post-Goodfellas, by the way), why can't you appreciate one of the most original and revolutionary? I respect this opinion, but I admit I'm curious about the reason :)

Then, now that you make me think about it... if the ranking is "from 1980 to today" as you say... Do we throw DiCaprio in the trash? And the whole action-muscles series? Stallone-Schwarzenegger-Willis-Gibs on-H. Ford????? S. Jackson? M. Douglas??? Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn?? Clint! Cliiiint????
