The Profile

Duke Pearson (1932–1980) was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and producer from Atlanta, Georgia. A key A&R figure at Blue Note Records in the 1960s, he collaborated closely with Donald Byrd and led sessions that yielded classics such as Wahoo!, Sweet Honey Bee, and The Right Touch.

Born in Atlanta in August 1932; began on brass before focusing on piano. Influenced by Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, and Sonny Clark. Worked with the Jazztet; moved to New York; key arranger/producer and talent scout at Blue Note under Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. Arranged for Donald Byrd (A New Perspective) and contributed to Grant Green’s Idle Moments; composed Cristo Redentor, Sweet Honey Bee, The Phantom. Wahoo! (1964) features Donald Byrd, James Spaulding, Joe Henderson, Bob Cranshaw, and Mickey Roker; Blue Note cover aesthetics tied to Francis Wolff’s photography and Reid Miles’s design.

A detailed, highly positive look at Duke Pearson’s 1964 Blue Note album Wahoo!, praised for elegant hard bop writing, modal colors, and cohesive arranging. The review highlights Pearson’s role as pianist-arranger-producer and Blue Note talent scout, his influences, and the stellar lineup (Byrd, Spaulding, Henderson, Cranshaw, Roker). It also nods to Blue Note’s iconic visual aesthetic via Francis Wolff and Reid Miles. Verdict: a lesser-known yet remarkably solid Blue Note gem.
