Iron Monkey meets Electric Wizard
What an impact, folks..!
This is the first excited opinion that the listening of this album by the Canadian Dopethrone has pulled out of me. Oh my, the band's name may not be the most original, but if you need a good dose of acidic and stunning doom stoner metal, "Dark Foil" is the CD for you.
Dopethrone truly know their stuff because they manage to create captivating yet deadly grooves. The riffs sound acidic, swampy, but at the same time extremely heavy, the drum tempos are slow and pachydermic, just as the genre proposed by the Canadians requires. The voice is raspy, piercing, bordering on black metal, although this type of singing isn't new, as Iron Monkey themselves have already offered it in unsuspecting times.
The most representative track of "Dark Foil" is titled "Zombie Powder," placed almost at the end of the album, fourteen colossal minutes, where all the elements of Dopethrone's sound converge into a single black and menacing monolith. Inserts of recorded voices, borrowed from horror films, then do the rest, shrouding the whole album in a sepulchral, mysterious, and arcane atmosphere.
Dopethrone certainly won't be remembered as innovators, but for those who like Doom Metal, the real one, the darkest one, and suffused with a aura of malignity, then they might find in this band a new, and especially fierce champion.
