.. "Sorrow", indeed .. Especially a lot, but mooooooore "Sorrow".. and a strong desire for "Hate"!
Before I set about executing the massacre of this album with a kilometer-long title, I would like to make a precision. That is, the one that requires me to say that this is the first album by "Domain" that I have listened to and that, probably, it will also be the last.
The reasons that led me to listen to it are many. Among the many, I can mention those that go on about the fact that the aforementioned band has been a cult band active since 1987 on German soil. Then there’s also the score given to the album by the magazine "Rock Hard" which describes it as an album "more than sufficient", therefore above average, meaning "listenable" (you really should read the review yourself..).
In short.. How to say.. The prospects for a "good listen" or, in any case, an inviting and yet not terrible listen, were there.
But, but, but.. We are still talking about power metal. And, when you venture into the realms of power, you have to tread carefully. That's why I preferred to download the album first and then review it.
And now let’s proceed with the massacre.
I’ll start right off by saying, using one of my most overused phrases, that this album really sucks.
And that might be enough to say that we are facing yet another crap album, which means I should have achieved my primary goal, which is to invite you not to download it at all.
But I want to inflict more pain. I’ll continue.
These "Domain", I don't know what they did in the previous years (truth be told, the thing intrigues me quite a bit; maybe, this is just the "rotten apple"?). But proposing a power metal album where they seem to have decided to ditch the symphonic component in favor of more powerful, aggressive, and solid metal, I don't think has paid off much for the band.
Because the whole thing is predictable and boring. Actually: extremely boring.
Take, for example, the first track: "Picture The Beauty". A good heavy riffing at the beginning, but everything is distorted by a poor way of constructing the song that will result in a plagiarism, in the refrain, of "Tears Of Mandrake" by Edguy (it's blatantly stolen, a carbon copy). If I were Sammett, I would have already traveled to Germany to kick the asses of the "Domain" and their crappy singer Nicolaj Ruhnow (who, apparently, replaced the previous singer Carsten Schultz.. another reason why I would like to listen to the band's previous works to get a somewhat more objective idea. And if I have to suffer, so be it! As they say: without suffering, you don't go to Heaven..).
That said, the other songs don't differ much from the opener. All constructed in the same way, all very similar to each other, all extremely boring.
Except for "Circle Of Give And Take" (a song "slightly" less boring than the others), the album fades into total nothingness (just listen to the dreadful "Inner Rage").
Ah, right, I almost forgot a detail. Not that it makes a positive difference, but let's see if you’re smart. What is always present in a power metal album? Can't figure it out? Of course: the obligatory ballad which, this time around, goes by the name of "12 O'Clock", included just to tone down the excess of ugliness of the songs. Now, don't think the ballad is good. In reality, it’s not even nice. Truth be told, it also kind of sucks and serves no bloody purpose at all. It's just a filler, as it should be in this type of albums. Just as stated in the rules of a respectable "power metalhead": "insert at least one crappy, possibly tear-jerking and syrupy ballad to tone down the listening of the album, only to then pick up again with the drivel left in the previous songs".
It was just like that, just to mention it.
A useless album, a boring album, an album that will make your arms fall and, once standing, will prevent you from walking normally because it will have caused a swelling to your poor tortured testicles. Testicles that you will drag around the house, at least until you manage to get those horrendous tacky and monotonous melodies of this damn power metal crap out of your head.
Recommended listening, however, to all those who, due to low intestinal motility or a sluggish colon, find it hard to poop and suffer from "persistent" or "chronic" constipation. You’ll see that after a couple of songs (but "Picture Of Beauty" will suffice) you'll run to the toilet with toilet paper in hand, humming the disgusting refrain to further stimulate bowel movements.
Sorry for interrupting so abruptly but.. Now, I really have to run to the toilet!!!!
