THE REVIEW

2007 was a year rich in interesting releases, but lacking in novelty and above-average albums, with the only exception being this new work by Dodheimsgard. The band returns after a full 8 years of absence since the acclaimed 666 International, and it does so excellently with an abrasive and extreme album that is at the same time classy and superbly arranged.

The band manages to perfectly blend electronics and the fiercest black metal, creating a futuristic and alienating atmosphere. The tracks are never monotonous or banal, because the band succeeds in exploring various genres within each song while maintaining homogeneity and a distinct basic style. The electronic arrangements are the real strength of Supervillain Outcast, mostly consisting of noises and distorted frequencies that are very peculiar and unsettling. The tracks that impressed me the most are "The snuff dreams are made of", my personal favorite, with its hypnotic progression and devastating chorus, which then surprises in the end with a very psychedelic melodic vocal reminiscent of Ved Buens Ende; the distinct "Apocalypticism" with its magnetic bass line; the atmospheric "All is not self" and the fierce and insane "Supervillain serum". Dodheimsgard are a band totally outside the box and avant-garde since their first "Kronet til Konge" back in 1995, capable of creating fascinating and innovative albums with each new release. The band did not disappoint even this time, creating a new masterpiece and maintaining exceptionally high standards, confirming themselves as one of the best groups in recent years.

In the cold neurotic night
I can't bring myself to tell you
I'm not who you thought I am
And I'd laugh until I died

I'm leading a quiet life
At an abandoned casino of nightmares

As if a stranger's face
Came home to play
And I lost my way
Something is missing

All day long
The light leaves lines of panic on the vine
It doesn't matter how hard you try
Wraiths astride tame tigers
We're tied to altars in the sky

If an abstract shell
Of a man remains
I won't be the same again

13   Supervillain Serum (04:21)

14   Cellar Door (00:53)

15   21st Century Devil (05:37)
