This newly released work by the Turinese Disarmonia Mundi is, for those encountering the band for the first time, simple, straightforward, and fun. However, for those who have known them for a while, it becomes devilishly difficult to give a judgment because there are several factors at play when talking about these aforementioned Piedmontese.
I'll start by saying that my rating is deserved on one hand because the band expresses themselves with a lot of clarity and good technique in their ultra-melodic Swedish style death metal. On the other hand, we are facing 11 tracks that all resemble each other and that, although confirming the excellent skill of the musicians, only serve to outline a panorama of compositional shortcomings on the band's part, considering and listening to their previous albums.
There is one thing about "Mind Tricks" that particularly struck me and didn't give me a good feeling: it seems that the band tried at all costs to make a super commercial album, in the sense that every single track is very catchy and with certain choruses unfortunately in the style of Eiffel 65 (that ever-Piedmontese group that did dance, I think that's their name), making one wonder what the band is actually trying to achieve with this record. The songs are all very well developed, to be fair, I reiterate that they know how to play and draw inspiration from bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, there's a little bit of Necrodeath (but just a little), as well as a little bit of Opeth and At The Gates.
However, overall there's still my underlying disappointment due to the startling similarity of the tracks among themselves and for many choruses with a voice very much like Eiffel 65. Another thing that left me with a bitter taste is the fact that this was supposed to be a step forward, "Mind Tricks" was supposed to represent a leap in quality and personality especially on the part of Disarmonia Mundi who instead remain too tied to the aforementioned Swedish bands, so much so that on reflection this album seems quite "already heard".
A point in favor remains the production (album recorded in Sweden...) and the ability of these Italian guys to deliver a very energetic product on par with the most significant exponents of this musical scene. They should not go unnoticed after all. For those who want to listen to them, I recommend starting with the older works "Nebularium" and "Fragments Of D-Generation" before moving on to this one. I believe that even you would confirm my impressions like this.
As done in other reviews, I won't dwell on individual songs here, just know that this record could be the synthesis of its musical genre in a very academic sense. A classroom assignment, in short, a bit trivial but written very well.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Resurrection Code (04:25)
The uttermost attraction
You repressed until tonight
Is breaking free like a boundless scream of ravenous desire
Feral resurrection
Dancing on a wire
Celebrate the darkness that is torturing your mind
[Chorus:]
Flow!
Your endless dreams are burning
Bright!
The resurrection code
[2x] Overflow of quivering shivers
Standing by the moon shapes
[2x] The night in me
Paralyze the sense from our state of disgrace
The senses from our state of disgrace
We must fall chase the end of nightmares
By the pulse of midnight we're reborn
In lycannihilation
Face the endless night
Your meaningless existence is a shelter between me and I
Rise for a midnight ride from a senseless life
The resurrection code
Galleries of shadows
Stain the crystal moonlight night
The netherbreed is reborn
Hail the eve of your decline
Chasing the dreams of the endless night solidify
The steps of time

They aim to make their melodic death metal as effective and engaging as possible.
I highly recommend 'Mind Tricks' to anyone wanting three-quarters of an hour of classy headbanging.
